I received the item in a timely manner. For the most part, it was as described. However, there was a black mark across the outer edge of the book. I am building my hardback collection, so I was a little disappointed. Overall it was a good bargain.

This collection of essays was released earlier this month. Essays are usually hit or miss for me,overall this collection worked very well for me. I especially loved the first half, in which much of it read like a homage to African American dance, dancers Jazz. I only recognized a few of the dancers mentioned, I did a little better with the Jazz artist (though barely). But it did not matter either way, Ntozake Shange wrote in such a way that it made me feel like I knew them, or at the very least I felt their love of movement and that was more then a enough. The author reminisces about the beginning of For Colored Girls Who Have Considered When the Rainbow is Enuf. One of the messages I got from this collection was that you can try to steal or silence the African Americans but we will always new way to speak and be heard, be it through dance, music or any other artistic avenue of our choice."We must sing and dance or we shall die an inert, motionless, "sin ritmo" death. "Negros muertos," killed by a culture afraid of who we are and what we have to say with our bodies, our music, and our brains. Black folks do have brains. We even have ideologists, scholars, choreographers, and always the grace of the goods. "Reading this collection reminded me how much I love Ntozake Shange's work, there's a beautiful rhythm to her words which always have purpose. The author reveals much of herself in each piece. I truly enjoyed this lost in language & sound, though I did question the inclusion of one piece entitled "2 live crew" Black men demoralizing Black women is still an issue but I just felt the exploration of 2 live crews exploits was dated. Its in inclusion always halted a bit of the flow of the collection. However I still highly recommend lost language & sound without missing a beat.

Poetry and prose if presented and mixed well with a demonstrative esthetic can work wonders for anyone trying to illustrate artistic value. Obie award-winning author and principal of `for colored girls who have considered suicide/when the rainbow is enuf', Notozake Shange has given us yet, another gem after the acclaimed Some Sing, Some Cry. This time around it's `lost in language & sound.' Readers who may not be familiar with the author would get quite a bit of information behind the scenes as she writes poignantly her emanation from minor to major. As such, the book reads like an autobiographical sketch exploring and expounding on how linguistic fortitude and specific aspects of the humanities has shaped her voice and virtue. It's much more prolific as she gives a profound personal look at the reflections through flashbacks on what it means to be artistic without compromise, a woman of worth, while allowing her blackness to be all that the race requires. The book is unique in the fact that it's descriptive in how she got from point A to B and all other points in between! I like the fact that she wrote it in the style that is uniquely hers (i.e., writing in lower case and using backslashes throughout), and with a sense of continuity that doesn't lose the reader. I felt her angst, reveled in her passion for love of the arts in music and dance, and was in awe of why she had to dance, and why writing was much more than an expression. Written with three distinct themes, the chapters are short but inspiring, each with reasons for all things relative to the craft. If anything, the sheer stylistic rendering forces you to keep up with the pace without losing insight. Essays play a strong part in describing a storyline that defines clarity in specific points of view, and most importantly, telling more stories ranging from the sublime to dramatic interludes. Her celebrated play `for colored girls' is prominently highlighted relative to the fact that it defined her need to present on her own terms realigning the English language to allow that production to shine. In it, and vestiges of the book, it reaffirms both generically and individually the female experience, the black experience and racial overtones. The question rendered (and answered quite adequately) was how do one live the aforementioned lives simultaneously borrowing artistic traits from her father and mother and making them a vociferous force?Ntozake Shange wrote in such a way that it made me feel like I should have been there to witness first hand her maturation process, or at the very least know that she belongs head and heels along with her peers of other persuasions. Serious readers who're looking for something different without straying too far to the left should appreciated `language' of this magnitude, and fans of the author would be grateful to add this book to others written by this gifted writer. There's a beautiful cadence to her words that flow like the the best river without rapids, but full of purposeful rhythm. I had no problem rating this book 5 stars (out of 5) and recommend it for the masses!

Especially if you've had the honor of visiting Bhutan, this is a wonderful book. Gorgeous photos. Fair price, fastshipping. Excellent seller.

Gorgeous! The text is a little small & can be difficult to read.

Unlike other photo-narratives on this often-mythologized kingdom, this practicing monk takes a sober, almost detached approach that reveals his calm. After a decade in the company of the Dalai Lama's tutor there, Tibetan refugee Dilgo Khyentse Rinpoche, and now the Dalai Lama's French translator himself, French-born Ricard brings the same considered evaluation of Buddhist practice and culture that his sponsorship and appearance in the films "Brilliant Moon" and "The Spirit of Tibet" (see my Dec. 2012 reviews) demonstrate about his devotion to his mentors. What this has to do with Bhutan as a larger entity comes across more gradually, and the brief three pages introducing each of these eight sections of his brilliantly reproduced color photography, 1980-2007, convey this more vividly than the miniscule font (too small, let alone the captions even smaller) do in this admittedly handsome, compact text, translated by Ruth Sharman.About half of this content in words and images features or complements the surroundings of his dharma teacher in Bhutan. This complements Ricard's other treatments of him; it means that much of the photography documents monasticism and ceremonies around its operations. As for the country, this is not the best introduction, as no reading list, no map, and very little background is given about the region. The urbanization of many Bhutanese and the complications of modernization are barely glanced at. Intentionally, no doubt, but readers may want to consult other titles as well. The typeface is as noted tiny and may not be legible for some readers. The book is elegantly laid out, but rather small. You get much less attention to the natural landscape and everyday people, although some stunning depictions of scenery (not only the expected panoramic vistas--one of Everest on the plane's way from Kathmandu to Paro--but abstracted patterns in reflected water) introduce the terse overview of the nation and its situation as the last Tantric Buddhist realm.Taksang, the cover's Tiger's Lair, endures as the iconic image of the land, and its chapter shows it as before and then restored after the fire of 1998: it looks splendid in both incarnations. Sacred architecture and crafts show the incorporation of the spiritual landscape into art and costume, the Great Accomplishment ceremony, the intricate movements of dance and the composed presence of ritual. Ricard observes the "clear" lesson exemplifed by such as the Trongsar five-day festival dramatizing the message of Buddhism: "we are the architects of our own being." (153)While Ricard does not delve into his own manner of entry into such situations, one may assume his own position allows him a privileged status and a rare insider's perspective that allows him to bridge Himalayan contexts and Western expectations of what such mysterious presentations of Buddhism mean. Bhutan here shimmers more in its less commonly depicted textiles, paintings, and decorations that grace the inside walls of places perhaps prohibited to tourists, and his combination of exterior and interior illustrations works well to provide a Buddhist point of view.

Beautiful pictures and captures the aura of Bhutan.

wonderful pre-trip info. We went

Having just visited Bhutan the contents of this book give a very insightful view of the country, historical and political, accompanied by beautiful photographs. A wonderful reference book which has made my trip come alive and will be a lasting memory of a very spiritual and interesting country. However, if you are looking for a guide book this book would not meet your needs.

Beautiful!

It’s with deep sadness that I bid adieu to one of my f-a-v-o-u-r-i-t-e series. But, don’t despair just yet, Anne Bishop has announced that she will be returning to THE OTHERS world in 2018! I enjoyed ETCHED IN BONE considerably more than book 4 because the scope of the story was much narrower which means that we get lots of Meg & Simon, and less of the rest of Thaisia. The plot was also milder in nature, and that was both a plus and a minus. Yay on account of it being more character driven, and nay since things end with a whisper instead of a bang. The focal point of this novel was Cyrus James Montgomery. He’s a con artist, and sees Lakeside as easy pickings because he has an in with his brother, mother and sister already in residence. Jimmy’s presumptuous, arrogant, and just plain daft if he believes that he can hide behind human laws in the Courtyard. The terra indigene mete out their own brand of justice; it’s ugly and barbaric, and in my opinion the punishments fit the crimes. CJ’s schemes escalate until he does the unthinkable. A shot to the heart would have probably hurt less! The citizens are busy picking up the pieces of whatever is left in the wake of Namid’s claws and teeth. Cel-Romano has practically fallen off the map, most of the land has been reclaimed by the wild country, and food rations abound in the surviving cities. The Simple Life folk and the Intuits are thriving, and the cassandra sangue are still a work-in-progress, but for the average human, life is hard. Meg’s female pack make inroads with the Others by breaking bread together for the first time, and two Elders observe it all like some twisted science experiment. The author doesn’t yank the rug out from under us as far as epiphanies go although, she does touch upon a few items that readers have been musing over such as what happens when a prophet’s old scars are reopened. There were also several delightful moments which I’d found to be lacking in the previous volume. Skippy will surprise you, and Corbyn makes a HUGE faux pas—I’m pretty sure that she only lives to tell the tale due to the fact that she’s the howling not-Wolf. And, yes, something DOES happen between Simon & Meg on the romantic front however, don’t set your hopes too high because… baby steps!Anne Bishop could have probably written ten more books in this series, and I still wouldn’t be entirely content, but overall ETCHED IN BONE was a happy finale.

Etched in Bone is the fifth book in "The Others" series wrote by Anne Bishop. You absolutely must read the previous books, or you will be hopelessly lost. The characters and world-building have been carefully built up by Bishop in each book. The first book in this series was magic, and the reason was the small village of the Others, the characters in and around the compound and Meg. Book 5 revisits that magical formula. Because the focus of the story narrows back to Meg and her friends, the book becomes an awesome treat and an excellent way to close out this groundbreaking series. For some reason it is harder to write a good review about a book than a bad one. With a bad review you can point to particular instances you didn't like, but with a good review you just know you liked it! And did I ever! Closing the book made me sad it had ended, but I was completely satisfied with my reading experience which kept me up half the night and involved me reading every single word and savoring it as I would an excellent steak or a glass of high-end champagne.BTW, the publisher sets the price of the book, and for a copy and paste job, it is very high priced. However, I consider Bishop's brilliance to be worth every penny, and I hope the publisher who gouged us is in turn taken to the cleaners when it comes time to renegotiate Bishop's contract.

Okay, okay, okay. I have been putting this book off for a bit. I got nervous after reading reviews. So...I put it off for a bit til I joined a Facebook group all things Others. They convinced me to dooo eeeeit! So...I read it. I am so glad I did I wasnt disappointed like I thought I would be when it came to Simon and Meg. Not even close! This book was a little different and yes everything moved a little slow with the book on figuring out what was happening next but it never deterred me from going on and keep finishing. I obsessively couldnt put it down unless I had to. This will contain spoilers and its been out for awhile I think its safe. So, if you dont want to read further I understand.Monty's brother is a sick dude! Its disgusting how much his son Clarence was learning from him. His poor daughter Francis. Even she was taking on some not great characteristics but moving on. I understand why people were upset that this whole situation with Cyrus was dragged out. It was in a way because honestly if it was up to Simon he wouldnt have made it past the first day. However, the Elders stepped in and it was a disaster throughout the book. Monty's sister Sierra...really? That girl is DAMAGED with a capital D. She was so mentally abused by her brother Cyrus it went on too long and Monty and Twyla enabled her too much. Sierra even put her brother Cyrus before her own kids...even warnings from Simon and Vlad and everyone else. She just didnt get it. She was too messed up. She ended up leaving in the night with her kids and perhaps that was a good thing. She needed away from Cyrus in a big way. Monty never really came around to his sister's ways although he was angry with her but Mama Twyla did. Tough love y'all. I just love Simon and Meg's relationship and what it could become. Its not a traditional relationship like we have or even experienced with other shifters. Its more subtle and slow. I was glad it was finally acknowledged they were potential mates. They have some so very sweet moments. I loved them at the end. I dont think it could have been any better. I know she is doing more Others but no more books on Simon and Meg but I do hope we get news about everyone in the others books at least. One thing is I wished things were tied up a little better at the end with all the other characters and what their future might be. Then again perhaps she'll touch more on things at a later date. I also think Cyrus could have done some different things. He was too easily caught and he just kept doing the same dumb things. He was a desperate man and total nutjob. He had a messy ending but well deserved!I am not sure about the next book Lake Silence. I might wait to see what people think of it and how it pans out before I pick it up. Spin offs are different and it probably wont have the same feel as this series.

The content is good. It's what I've been looking for. Price versus quality is good. The text needs some serious editing however. There are many instances of poor grammar and misspellings. Some sections are hard to understand for this reason.

I didn’t care for the writing style or book quality. Kind of a cheap publisher. I preferred the Bulletproof SSL book.

It was a quick read and in some ways it was informative. Other than the variety of spelling and grammatical errors I enjoyed the content. I'm a newbie to TLS and this helped me get started. Could have done with some sequence diagrams to better explain the flow between server and client.

Yea! I learned what I wanted to learn in less than 600 freaking pages! Take that, all you wordy authors out there!

Really a good and concise introduction to SSL and TLS. If you're trying to wrap you head around certificates and web security, you'll find this short work on the subject useful. It's not the last word, and the section on threats could use an update (Poodle, Drown) but it's a good overview.

This is a 10,000 foot introduction to SSL/TLS, and the information presented here is available for free on he web. I did wish it gave more real world examples, even simple ones.

A good book covering SSL/TLS in 41 pages. If you are a beginner or intermediate user, this book will be valuable for you. If you are already an expert, not so much.

could use a proof read ....

Book is a bit dated. For example several of the general proposals for why don't they do x,y, or z to eliminate waste are now commonplace. That said, it is a foundational book for lean thinking and referenced so regularly even today that reading it is almost a duty; and reading it will feel like you are on duty. Caffeine may be required. The concepts remain relevant, but if you are in a service environment you will have to challenge your self to find relatable examples. If you are a hardcore Engineerish type this may be your favorite book.

After purchasing Womack’s Gemba walks I hot this book and was really torn for choice. I wanted to read them both at once! Sadly, I force myself to stop this and continue Gema Walk. If you are interested in learning more about business process and understanding the Value stream in your company and really want to make a change, buy it! Don’t waste time reading my review!

"I would strongly recommend reading "Lean Solutions" prior to this book. It does a good job explaining the lean principles as they apply to the manufacturing industry and is loaded with many real world examples. I had no idea how long it took a can of soda to hit the shelves of a particular store. The book even describes an action plan to take in order to bring in a "lean revolution". However to be honest, in my opinion if you are working in a service delivery industry as opposed to a manufacturing industry, while the principles, concepts and thinking are the same, you may get just a bit more out of "Lean Solutions". Overall a very good book, and I do recommend it with a minor caveat. This book should not be seen as a "How to be Lean" book.

Are you in management, maybe even new to management? This is a must-read. I immediately could see many of the ideas and principles in this book applying to my new position at work.

Bought the book for a job interview. Applying these methods to the creation of software architecture.very interesting approach to the problem.

Lean is a specific management technique to make an organization more efficient (and a private sector company more profitable). This book is a well written introduction to the subject. The authors, James Womack and Daniel Jones, provide lots of examples to illustrate their basic points. Thus, this is a very useful introduction to the subject, for those of us who are not experts on this matter. To start at the beginning. . . . The enemy is "Muda," a Japanese word that means "waste," in all of its manifestations. Lean is an approach to reducing Muda. Pie in the sky? Toyota is one of the pioneers in this movement, and it is now the # 1 automaker in the world--so, maybe, we ought to pay some attention to the concept. As the authors note (Page 15): ". . .Muda is everywhere." And the antidote to muda is lean. The Introduction itself does a nice job of laying out the key concepts of Lean. Then, each part of the book builds on that foundation. Key points: (1) Value. Value is defined by the ultimate customer. The problem? Corporations and other organizations often think that they know best and do not really understand what the end user wishes as value. As the authors note (Page 19): "Lean thinking therefore must start with a conscious attempt to precisely define value in terms of specific products with specific capabilities offered at specific prices through as dialogue with specific customers." (2) The Value Stream. This is the actions needed to bring (Page 19) ". . .a specific product (whether a good or a service. . .) through the three critical management tasks of any business." (3) Flow. Outline the step-by-step process by which goods and services are delivered and identify muda, so that waste can be reduced/eliminated. (4) Pull. Develop a process such that customers pull the product from the source/supplier. (5) Perfection. Keep working on improving the product/output, by incremental changes leading to further reduction of muda.Examples abound. Think of the miserable experience these days of flying from place to another. Muda is everywhere (see the discussion on pages 32-35).Part I lays out the lean principles in much more detail (Value through Perfection, steps 1 through 5 already summarized). Part II explores lean in more detail (including comparing lean versus the German approach). And so on.Want to know about lean? This is a pretty good introduction, as far as I can tell, for a lay audience. I'm not an expert, but I think that I have learned quite a bit of value from reading this work.

Excellent book. Must read if you are a lean purist.

This is a good example on the application of lean philosophy, so far I enjoyed listening to this audio-book.

Overrun: Dispatches from the Asian Carp Crisis

Review

”A thorough look at an important ― and multifaceted ― topic.” ― Publishers Weekly“Overrun is a whip-smart romp through the dystopian history of Asian carp, that wrecking ball of aquatic ecosystems in North America. But in telling it, Reeves charts a sustainable future for the waterways that connect all of us on the continent. An environmental writer as good as Reeves gives me hope.” ― Harry Thurston, winner of the Lane Anderson Award for Excellence in Canadian Science Writing and the Sigurd F. Olson Nature Writing Award“The definitive narrative of carp in America. Reeves chronicles the complex web of good intentions, imperfect science, and different agencies and entities working at cross purposes that led to the carpification of U.S. waterways. His tour through the quest to regain control is compelling and comprehensive. In the end, Reeves takes a broad and holistic view of the issue, pointing out that fighting a few enemy fish species in the absence of meaningfully addressing the pollution, land management, water management, and climate change that create the conditions for carp to thrive is like dueling with our own shadow. The carp is the symptom, not the disease. A must-read for those who love the Mississippi River watershed and the Great Lakes, for those interested in “invasive” species, for sport fishers and environmental historians.” ― Emma Marris, author of Rambunctious Garden“A riveting “can’t put it down” book about fish? You bet! Andrew Reeves takes us on a dizzying journey along the waterways of North America with a rich cast of fish farmers, environmentalists, hustlers, scientists and befuddled politicians as we follow the murderous and seemingly unstoppable advance of Asian Carp that now threaten the Great Lakes themselves. This is a very important book to heed if we want to save this watershed.” ― Maude Barlow, author of Boiling Point“With a journalist’s critical eye and storytelling ability . . . Overrun is more than an engaging story about nuisance fish. This eye-opening book demonstrates the interrelationship of species, the climate, and the environment.” ― Foreword Reviews

From the Back Cover

“With deep reporting and smart writing, Andrew Reeves not only illuminates the long, strange tale of the Asian carp in North America but also shows us its underlying truths. This is a story about cities and water, food and soil, humans and other species ― and one fantastically troublesome fish.” ― Michelle Nijhuis, science journalist and winner of the aaas Kavli Science Journalism Award “The definitive narrative of carp in America… A must-read for those who love the Mississippi River watershed and the Great Lakes, for those interested in ‘invasive’ species, for sportfishers and environmental historians.” ― Emma Marris, author of Rambunctious Garden “This detailed account of the invasion of Asian carp into North American waterways reads like a Kurt Vonnegut novel or science fiction. Yet the carp’s unbelievable progress splashes another clear warning about how so-called solutions have become the chief cause of our problems.” ― Andrew Nikiforuk, author of Empire of the Beetle Intelligent investigative writing meets experiential journalism in this important look at one of North America’s most voraciously invasive species Politicians, ecologists and government wildlife officials are fighting a desperate rearguard action to halt the onward reach of Asian carp, now within a handful of miles from entering Lake Michigan. With writing that is both urgent and wildly entertaining, Andrew Reeves traces the carp’s explosive spread throughout North America from an unknown import meant to tackle invasive water weeds to a continental scourge that bulldozes through everything in its path. From aquaculture farms in Arkansas to the bayous of Louisiana; from marshlands in Indiana to labs in Minnesota; and from the Illinois River to the streets of Chicago, where the last line of defense has been laid to keep Asian carp from reaching the Great Lakes, Overrun takes us on a firsthand journey into the heart of a crisis.

My brother, who enjoys kayaking, told me about a video showing a man in a boat who is armed with a baseball bat, ready to the strike giant leaping fish that fly out of the water. We may laugh, but the reality isn't funny. Those fish are foreign species from Asia. And they are taking over.We Michiganders fear those fish as the next wave of invasive species ready to decimate our already degraded Great Lakes ecosystems. That crystal clear Lake Michigan water? It isn't a good sign, even if vacationers think its great. It is the sign of a dying lake, with already nothing much left for the fish to eat.And Asian carp are really, really good at eating microscopic organisms, thus competing with native fish. Plus, their waste promotes the growth of toxic algae, already a problem in Lake Erie thanks to farm fertilizer runoff--and the destruction of the wetlands that used to filter the water.If--or rather, when--the carp reach the Great Lakes, we expect a further decline in sport fish, boaters attacked by leaping fish, and an increase in water toxicity. Goodbye, recreational and fishing industries--and pure drinking water. How and why bighead carp were introduced in 1955 and the consequences are presented in the highly readable Overrun.Environmental journalist Andrew Reeves takes us on a journey, beginning with the first person to explore use of Asian carp as a natural and non-chemical way to control aquatic weeds, part of the reaction to Rachel Carson's book Silent Spring warning of the harm from pesticides.I read Carson in the 1960s. I remember the first Earth Day. w I was a senior in high school when I bought a"Give Earth a Chance" pin. I took ecology in college. I learned organic gardening. Sure, I too would have supported a natural control over chemicals. I am all for anything to limit the chemical profusion that once seemed the panacea for all our ills before it was revealed as a source of new ills.Asian carp, the aquatic-weed-eater par excellence, was introduced to clogged waterways in the South as a natural alternative to pesticides. It seemed like a great idea. One thing we humans are good at is forgetting that when we tweak an ecosystem there are consequences. As the carp found their way into the environment the consequences became manifest. Like, competing with native species.Reeves visited the people who think that we should sterilize the carp to limit their population, and the people who think barriers will keep the carp where we want them, and those who believe closing down the Chicago Canal will stop them, and the people who think that fishing the carp (and introducing them to the American dinner plate) will control their numbers. Reeves discovered that the political and environmental realities are so complex there is no easy answer. There is no way we are going to stop the carp. Decisions made generations ago set up a domino effect that we can't stop. Can we restore the Great Lakes--America's--ecosystems? If the will is there, perhaps a whole-ecosystem approach can make a difference.I received a free ebook from the publisher through NetGalley in exchange for a fair and unbiased review.

This is a very good summary. I'm skeptical about movies that are summarized into children's book, because sometimes the plot ends up choppy and over-edited. Not in this case -- the narrative flowed well enough and the layout of the pictures and text was suitable to keep a kid (my 4-year-old) entertained.

Cute story that picks up after the events of Finding Nemo. It's a nice continuation on what happens afterwards, and it makes things come full circle for everyone. Nice artwork within that is different from the Big Golden Book version.

Nice illustrations. The length and complexity of language you would expect from a Golden Book. Well-constructed.

My son was not quite old enough to see this in the theater, but we are excited to get the dvd. However he loves finding nemo and has been very excited to see all of his favorite characters in stores. This is one of his new favorite books. It is a classic golden books version of a Disney movie. Enjoy!

Such a cute story - my granddaughter loved it! Can't wait to see the movie.

But my two year old who loves all things Dory enjoys the book often.

Daughter absolutely loved this book, she just turned 3.

Wonderful quality with lovely illustrations and really well summarized story. This Disney/Little Golden Book was done well!

Review

"Bosnian writer Bakic’s debut teems with the oddball narratives of George Saunders, the eerie atmosphere of Edgar Allan Poe, and the feminist intellect of Marge Piercy. . . . Told in a straightforward manner that transports speculative fiction into almost realist territory, Bakic’s collection imaginatively and strikingly examines sci-fi tropes from not only the point of view of women, but also from the voice of an effortlessly gifted writer whose future is much brighter than that of those depicted in her stories." —Publishers Weekly (starred review) “Bakic’s stories are perfectly of the American short-fiction zeitgeist—dark, sometimes indeterminate, sidestepping realism—but as the afterword points out, there are few writers from the Balkans that make use of the speculative or the dystopian in their work, which makes this collection all the more darkly alluring.”—Kirkus Reviews “Mars showcases Asja Bakić’s strong and unique voice. These are sly, uncommon stories—a rare mix of the witty and the visceral, with no small hint of the decadent and transgressive. A major talent.” —Jeff VanderMeer, author of Borne “Mars is a compelling collection of finely nuanced stories that are equally playful, haunting, erotic, willfully mischievous, profoundly melancholy, and more than a touch perverse. Jennifer Zoble’s masterful translation of Asja Bakić’s youthfully elastic genre-blending prose is a stunning achievement, and these stories are an absolute pleasure to read.” —Donald Breckenridge, author of You Are Here “Asja Bakić’s debut will transport you to another world, one that is as ethereal as it is cryptic. A visceral, imaginative, and deeply satisfying work.” —Cristina Rodriguez, Deep Vellum Books “Unsettling in unsettling ways, Bakić’s mix of realism with science fiction and fabulism occupies the uncanny valley between the recognizable and the unrecognizable, unsheathing the weirdness of daily life.” —Josh Cook, Porter Square Books “There’s an immediacy to Bakić’s offbeat worldview, sometimes strange and surreal, sometimes terrifying and upsetting, that pairs perfectly with the madness of the current political moment.” —Locus Magazine

The Story of Grandma GatewoodWas interested in reading this because it's about the Appalachian trail which I've been on a few feet of it in TN and MA.At 67, in 1955 she left Ohio and took a bus to WV and onto Georgia where she started her trail hiking.Love hearing of all the nature and can picture it all in my mind. Amazing that my family has relatives that live in the same town as where she was from.Lots of history with politics and events that happened over the days: first major highways made...I received this book from National Library Service for my BARD (Braille Audio Reading Device).

Grandma Gatewood was a 67 year old woman, whose 11 children had grown up and left home when she decided that she was going to hike the entire length of the Appalachian Trail from Mt. Oglethorpe, Georgia to Mt. Katahdin, Maine. The key, however, is that she didn't tell a soul about her intended trip…she just took off. In addition to being the first female through hiker to complete the trail, she did it with a bare minimum of gear and equipment and she did it in the summer if 1955, when women just didn't do those things. She started in canvas top sneakers and ended up going through 7 pairs of shoes. The book alternates between the story of Gatewood's life from the time she was married to an abusive husband until the time she started her "walk" with the story of her time on the trail. In addition, the author adds historical information, such as details about the damage done by Hurricanes Carol and Dianne.Grandma Gatewood did more to "advertise" the Appalachian Trail than anyone before or since, and became famous for her walks in various places. She not only hiked the AT three times (twice as a through hiker and once in segments), but she also hiked the Oregon Trail and helped to create a trail system in her native Ohio. It's wouldn't be out of place to call her one of the most influential women of her time. The book is a fascinating look at her abusive married life, as well as her interest in hiking. It is easy to read and provides a glimpse into life in the mid 1950's. I recommend this book highly to anyone as a great read.

I've been reading a few books lately about hiking - the Appalachian Trail and the Pacific Crest Trail. It's been very interesting. This particular book is definitely the most inspiring of all. I totally loved it and have been recommending it to all my friends. What an amazing woman Emma Gatewood was. We are all "soft" today compared to her. Lol. It's hard to even imagine doing what she did at her age. What really surprised me the most was learning that this 2,050 mile trip on the AT at age 67 was just the beginning! She hiked it two more times after that and then when she was well into her 70s she hiked the entire Oregon trail too from its beginning point in Missouri. Amazing! Then, after that, she was instrumental in getting a trail blazed through Ohio and actually blazed 6 miles of it all by herself clearing the way to make a trail. She never quit hiking and working all the way up to the day she died at age 84 I believe it was. I was so inspired by her. She was an incredible woman & inspired so many people after her hike on the AT. This was back in 1955 when she did that with no modern hiking supplies at all. She walked in Keds sneakers. No tent. No cook stove. No water purifier. No sleeping bag. No backpack. Not much food or water. Barely any money. $30 a month Social Security check. Before seeing this book on Amazon I had never even heard of her. I'm so glad I read this. I'm not even a hiker myself either. An armchair wanna be hiker I guess you could say at age 68. That's why I wanted to read this so much. It was like if she could do it maybe there's hope for me too. Haha. I'm lucky to get through my 2 mile morning walk. Can you even imagine covering 20 - 30 miles a day? Phew!

In Ben Montgomery’s eye-opening profile, Grandma Gatewood’s Walk: The Inspiring Story of the Woman Who Saved the Appalachian Trail, readers encounter the real life folk heroin Emma Gatewood. On the trail, her story is legend; and it takes on such proportions for a plethora of reasons, some of which have nothing to do with hiking. She gave birth to eleven children and somehow managed to find the time and energy to help her husband run a farm—several, in fact. She found time to read the classics. She wrote poetry and kept a detailed journal. She hiked. She spent lots of time in the woods. She knew all the local flora and fauna, what was edible, what was medicine, and what to avoid. She endured the tragedy of a violently abusive marriage to one P.C. Gatewood, a “relationship” in which he consistently physically assaulted and raped her; on at least one occasion he broke one of her ribs. She was a fighter, a survivor, and a trailblazer in every sense of those words. And yes, she was the first woman to thru-hike the Appalachian Trail: not once, not twice, but three times—also a first. Emma Gatewood, perhaps because of that adversity, those tragedies and hardships, would turn her story into one of a triumph of the human spirit by doing nothing more than putting one foot in front of the other: more than five million times over the course of nearly five months. On 3 May, 1955, Emma Gatewood, sixty seven year old mother of eleven, stood on Mt. Oglethorpe in Georgia, which was at that time the southern terminus of the Appalachian Trail, and prepared to take her first steps toward Mt. Katahdin in Baxter State Park in the state of Maine more than 2,000 miles away. She would do this in a single push; she would thru-hike the Appalachian Trail. The average hiker who completes this feat takes from five to seven months. Over this time, hikers brave the elements, cuts, scrapes, bruises, wild animals, danger to life and limb through falling or injury, hunger, disease, and any number of other dangers. Thus, thru-hikers are also generally well prepared, even if they carry as little as possible to cut back on weight over very long hikes. From a tent, rain gear, bug spray and sunscreen, food, water filters and cooking materials, extra-socks and clothing to perhaps even a second pair of shoes or boots, most hikers will carry everything they need in an ultra-light, well designed pack that, on average, weighs somewhere between thirty and fifty pounds. (The recommendation is that a pack shouldn’t weigh more than 20% of a hiker’s body weight.) On that day in 1955, Emma Gatewood had with her a shower curtain for a shelter, a tasteful dress in case she needed to look nice, some mints, and other various and sundry items in a pack she had sewn out of denim. She carried this pack, weighing twelve pounds, slung over her shoulder. It’s at this point in Ben Montgomery’s profile that readers come to understand that they have never done anything this hardcore in their life. At 268 pages, Montgomery’s volume is by no means slim; it is, however, a page turner. A lot also has to do with the narrative structure Montgomery deploys. Rather than working from birth to death and detailing the events of a life chronologically, Montgomery breaks the text up into parallel thematic elements. Over the course of the essay he pairs the trail narrative with that of Gatewood’s personal life, or the background of social and political history. Some reviewers have criticized this narrative structure, suggesting that some of the historical, social and political commentary distracts from Gatewood’s story. However, such criticism fails to fully grasp Montgomery’s purpose.  By organizing the text in this manner, Montgomery achieves the feat of helping (careful) readers to understand just how rebellious, how revolutionary, Emma Gatewood’s walk really was. In this light, hiking becomes not an activity of leisure in which one seeks health and wellness —though in some sense it is that—it instead becomes an act of defiance. Additionally, it shows that Emma’s life, very nearly from beginning to end, was simultaneously full of both beauty and danger. Both the title and organization of the chapter “Rhododendron and Rattlesnakes” juxtapose elegant, delicate beauty with life-threatening danger:South of town, in a cabin on Sugar Creek, Emma Gatewood learned she was pregnant with her first child not long before her new husband struck her for the first time. He smacked her with an open hand, and the sharp sting of his palm on her cheek stunned her, frightened her. (33-34)In our imaginations we are with Emma Gatewood on “Sugar Creek”, a meandering stream, perhaps hard by some lazy acreage as she caresses her swelling belly, as she thinks about the future, as she hopes, as she dreams the dreams of a life yet lived. Then we feel the “sting” of a hand on her face as we too are “stunned” by a “strike” seemingly out of the blue. Surely, Montgomery’s word choice is no accident; he’s painting P.C. Gatewood as a viper. Rhododenra thrive in harsh environments, sometimes under severe conditions such as those often found on the AT, or in this case, at home. Furthermore, the use of the singular in "rhododendron" suggests the singularity of Gatewood's person, while rattlesnakes suggests the plurality of her trials. It is this type of narrative brilliance that allows Ben Montgomery to tether Emma Gatewood’s personal life to the trail narrative. In so doing, he shows how factual events in a life become a metaphor: “She was surrounded by unfamiliar territory, alone in a foreign place, full of curiosity and also dread and fear of the unknown” (33). Despite the fact that Montgomery, here, is talking about a specific experience of Gatewood’s journey on the trail, it applies to her personal life as well. And that’s the point. In addition to the supplying details from Emma Gatewood’s personal life, Montgomery provides his readers with a sense of the social and political setting in the 1950s, further highlighting the uniqueness, perhaps even the rebelliousness of her decision and actions. It was an incredibly conservative era in American history when a woman’s place was in the home. It was the era of the “Sunday drive”. It was a time when people were supposed to be moving to the suburbs and enjoying the peace and comfort of the good life from behind a white picket fence. It was also a politically charged and revolutionary era. McCarthyism was rampant, the cold war was in full swing, the U.S. had just tested an H-bomb on Bikini atoll, desegregation was at the center of social and political issues, and we must keep in mind that the mid-1950s was the nascence of the counter-cultural movement that would later explode and culminate in Woodstock. This is the same decade (the 50s) that Kerouac published The Dharma Bums and On the Road. This is the same decade in which climbers such as Royal Robbins, Steve Roper and Yvon Chouinard would seek an alternative to the conservatism being espoused by society in general. As young men they eschewed the norm and headed to Yosemite, living as “dirtbags”. They would climb and define a new, alternative ethic for how to live one’s life. It is during all this that Emma Gatewood chose to walk. Given the backdrop of conservative America, her act was one of revolution. As to why “Grandma Gatewood” did all this? That remains a mystery. She achieved national celebrity during her hike. Reporters tracked her down, followed and documented her journey on the trail; Sports Illustrated wrote a profile of the grandmother from Ohio. All along, whatever they sought to know or whatever questions they asked, there was one that they all had in common: “Why are you doing this?” Gatewood gave a number of responses over the years, but never seemed to provide a full, satisfactory answer. As Montgomery has it,Emma was coy when people asked why, at her age, she had decided to strike out on the long trail. As America’s attention turned more toward Emma in her final days on the A.T., as newspaper reporters ramped up their dispatches to update the public on her condition and whereabouts, she offered an assortment of reason about why she was hiking. The kids were finally out of the house. She heard that no woman had yet thru-hiked in one direction. She liked nature. She thought it would be a lark.I want to see what’s on the other side of the hill, then what’s beyond that. (160)Outside of some brief speculation, entertaining any number of possibilities as to why Emma Gatewood would do this, Montgomery concludes that the best answer to this question came from Emma herself, and not from those attempting to interpret the various answers she provided over the years. Montgomery believes that the simple reason, in Emma’s own words was, “Because I wanted to” (259). Outside of the epilogue and acknowledgements, here the book ends. It is most fitting that Montgomery ends it with Emma’s words, and not his.In my experience a good many members of the outdoors community find their outlet in out of doors activities such as climbing, hiking, kayaking, camping, fishing, etc. It is also my experience, or at least my perception, that the percentage of people in this community who are victims of trauma, battle mental illness, or experience moderate to severe anxiety or stress exceeds that of the national average. (I may have to write an essay on this.) Emma Gatewood seems to be no exception. Given her experience it may be easy for audiences to think that she was running from something, or perhaps running toward something. Perhaps that’s true. And while Montgomery is satisfied with Emma Gatewood’s “Because I wanted to”, he also admits that her numerous answers seem “as though she wanted people to seek out their own conclusions” (160). I like to think that she was walking through it. No one can run that long or that far. Whatever we run from will eventually catch us.  We can, however, out-endure it. Whatever “it” is. When we walk, we walk with our problems, not away from them; we acknowledge their existence. In acknowledging their existence we provide ourselves the opportunity for a solution. Walking provides the focus and perspective necessary to discover the solution. The road may be long, with many a-winding turn, but only by setting out and putting one foot in front of the other, again, and again, and again, will we get there.Â
