I have taught piano for over thirty years. Faber and Faber books are one of my favorite resources for my young students. Many songs in Jazz & Blues may be 75 years old but my 7 to 12 year old students enjoy the melodies, the rhythm and the lyrics, plus the transcription styles are level appropriate. The teacher duet sections enrich my students learning experience as the blended harmonies help them learn and appreciate the joy of performing with other musicians. I would recommend these books even for older beginning students. They are just plain fun.

Piano instructor writing. Level 1 for student, advanced for accompaniment part. Really nice set of duets.

This is my daughter's music book, for her piano classes. She is just a beginner taking lessons, and her teacher recommended this book. The songs have a much better groove than her last book, so it's starting to become fun to hear her play.

fun and funky book

This is an excellent book for level 1 students. I like to use it forsight reading duets as well as prepared material. There are no otherbooks I know of that use such charming songs (like "Five Foot Two, Eyes of Blue") with such expertly crafted arrangements. Faber and Faber area great team. After 15 years of teaching piano, it didn't take me long to fall in love with this one!!! Happy Playing Amanda Geary

My daughter is 11 years old and loves this book :)

Perfect for a beginner/intermediate player

love it

Christ of the Celts: The Healing of Creation, by J. Philip Newell

From Publishers Weekly

Diagnosing the human soul with a longing for peace in the face of fear and fragmentation nurtured by global political forces and fundamentalisms, Newell offers the ancient traditions of Celtic Christianity as a way forward in healing humankind and the earth. An international retreat leader who is the former warden of Scotland's Iona abbey, the author of Listening for the Heartbeat of God argues we discover unity as we become connected to one another and allow ourselves to be surprised by the Presence that is within creation and within the human soul. Drawing on ancient and contemporary sources both within and outside the conventional Christian canon, Newell is critical of, and offers alternatives to, ancient Christian doctrines like creation ex nihilo (out of nothing), original sin and substitutionary atonement. Although the volume has some winning and touching anecdotes about the writer's own spiritual journey and heroes, it is frustratingly gauzy in parts. Written with an inviting sensitivity to other faith traditions, this introduction to a Celtic Christ will most likely appeal to those who find Christ-tinged creation spirituality in an interfaith context appealing. Diagnosing the human soul with a longing for peace in the face of fear and fragmentation nurtured by global political forces and fundamentalisms, Newell offers the ancient traditions of Celtic Christianity as a way forward in healing humankind and the earth. An international retreat leader who is the former warden of Scotland’s Iona abbey, the author of Listening for the Heartbeat of God argues we discover unity as we become connected to one another and “allow ourselves to be surprised by the Presence that is within creation and within the human soul.” Drawing on ancient and contemporary sources both within and outside the conventional Christian canon, Newell is critical of, and offers alternatives to, ancient Christian doctrines like creation ex nihilo (out of nothing), original sin and substitutionary atonement. (May) (Publishers Weekly, March 2008) Countless Americans already know Newell's inspirational voice -- calling to them to re-engage their spiritual senses through popular books like Listening for the Heartbeat of God. Now, Newell takes a startlingly different approach toward readers and offers a full-fledged manifesto that seeks to reshape the way most Western Christians think about the core of their faith.--(http://www.readthespirit.com/explore/2008/05/166-conversatio.html)

J. Phillip Newell is a prolific writer on Celtic Christianity and spirituality. The title “Christ Of The Celts” (2008) suggests a work on Christology however the book covers many current theological themes. This book follows the successful pattern of Newell’s other books such as “Listening to the Heartbeat of God” (1997). Newell addresses a different topic in each chapter, and then introduces comments from Celtic writers to offer fresh perspectives to current questions. This straightforward structure make Newell’s books easy to read and also pleasing to the reader because they widen theological perspectives. For example, when was the last time you read a book that quoted Pelagius? The opening chapter explores the theme that Christ is the memory of what we of have forgotten. The writings of the ninth century theologian John Scotus Eriugena are cited to remind us that “We suffer from the “soul’s forgetfulness” (pg.44). Christ come to show us the face of both God and man, and to reveal our deepest identity. He came to wake us up and to call us back to relationship with Him.In Chapter Two, Newell argues that the doctrine of original sin has wrongly given us that the sense that our deepest essence is opposed to God. Here the thought of the Celtic theologian Pelagius is introduced to remind us that God is at the center of our lives. In addition, Pelagius opposed the doctrine of original sin because he believed that if the soul was defined as evil and sinful, this would undermine the essential goodness that God created in each person.Chapter Three points to the goodness of nature and that nature itself comes from the goodness of God. Here Irenaeus of Lyons is cited to demonstrate the close links between the sacred and the natural. These are also themes of the great Celtic thinker Eriugena who linked the deepest energies in our bodies and souls to the deepest patterns and rhythms of the earth as expressions of God.Chapter Four explores the doctrine of creation out of nothing. The Celtic writers did not believe creation came from nothing. Eriugena’s writings by contrast stressed two “books” of God which we need to listen to together: the word of revelation, and the book of creation. In Chapter Five, “The Sound of Love”, Newell discusses the importance of listening. Here Newell cites the work Dame Julian Norwich, one of the greatest of English mystics, who was raised in Northumbria, an ancient foothold of the Celtic church. According to Newell, Julian taught that the more we listen, the more we come in touch with ourselves and with God. Julian’s famous phrase that “all shall be well an all shall be well and all manner of things shall be well” (72) is rooted in the knowledge that God’s love will never cease or disappear from the longings of each soul.Chapter Six discusses the doctrine of the substitutionary atonement. Newell argues that this understanding of the substitutionary atonement is directly opposed to our deepest experiences of forgiveness and that we need to find a “new language to speak about the way in which Christ leads us into the experience of forgiveness” (80). Newell suggest we look at the “Cross” to find this new perspective. The cross displays love and also discloses the cost of that love. “To offer the heart is to offer the self. And so the cross, in addition to being a revelation of the nature of God, is a revelation of our true nature, made in the image of God. It reveals that we come closest to our true self when we pour ourselves out in love for one another, when we give our hear and thus the whole of our being” 85). This is the master theme of the book; a turning away from a focus on individual salvation, to a salvation for the whole world.Chapter Seven, “The Hymn of the Universe” describes how God’s presence is everywhere, and at the very center of creation itself. This is shown in the life of two great church figures from the last century. One is George MacLeod the founder of the Iona Community. Another is Pierre Teilhard de Chardin, the French mystic and priest.A final Final chapter questions a view of salvation which is limited to the individual and champions the need for a whole salvation.Newell’s books are easy to read-they are extremely well written and crafted. That is not to say they don’t raise difficult questions because they do This book is clearly controversial because it questions many “traditional” doctrines such as creation out of nothing, the Fall, and the substitutionary view of the atonement. However on reflection, these are theological themes upon which there have always been great debate and discussion. What is most laudable about Newell’s books is that he is trying to address the issues and questions of modern Christians (for lack of a better term) with the writings of many great Celtic writers. In addition, these themes made the reader question and think about how many of these theological doctrines were made in the first place and how they can be crafted again.

This book serves as a note of encouragement for our times. The Celticview of the meaning of "Christ" delivers a message based on experienceover the beliefs that have so long muddied the lives of many people. JPNbrings the experience of Christ to a universal audience. He says that "theimage of God is at the core of our being. And like the Garden, it has notbeen destroyed. It may have become covered over or lost sight of, butit is at the beginning of who we are." Modern non-dual teachings, bothinside and outside of religions, involve this direct approach to theexperience of recognizing ourselves, or the identity of "I." We are notthe identity which our cultures and religions and science keep sayingwe are. And the amazing thing is that our own experience, if we carefullyrefer to it, will tell us that we are indeed that which JPN says we havecovered over or lost sight of. Paul Cezanne, the painter, said muchthe same thing: "The time will come when a single carrot, freshlyobserved, will set off a revolution." John Philip Newell is an igniterof this revolution in each of us!

I bought this book to participate in a book discussion. We are reading only one chapter a month, but I could not help myself---I am reading a chapter every night. I plan to start reading from the beginning again after I finish my first time through. The emphasis on God's love rather than judgment and the manifestation of God through Creation are concepts that receive little, if any, attention in today's churches. The book's content is fascinating and Newell's writing style is engaging. I just wish I had read this book years ago. This book is a keeper for anyone interested in Celtic Christianity.

Not qualified to offer a review but I can say that this book has some very transformational ideas in it. I have read harsh reviews that complain it is too simplistic or does not contain enough "meat". I would contend that you will be very satisfied if you read this book with an open heart. It will challenge most people's ideas about sin and atonement. If you're interested in expanding your thinking, especially if you are a Christian who is looking for a deeper connection to you deepest spiritual roots, this introduction to Celtic thinking and ideas will be for you. Very readable. You WILL underline things in this book even if you were always told not to write in books. You won't be able to help yourself.

This short, thoughtful, lyrical text, manages to address most of the Christian faith's most problematic doctrines. The inspiration for this re-imagining are the "church fathers" of the Celtic world, rooting Newell's vision in a solid lineage and historical precedent. If you need extensive footnotes and Biblical chapter and verse, it will not be convincing. But if you read with an engaged heart, as a Christian who knows Christ as Love Embodied, you will be cheering on every page. Seriously one of the best books I've ever read.

Excellent volume! Brilliant, accessible, and highly thought-provoking book by one of the world's foremost, contemporary voices on the Celtic tradition.

In this book, J Philip Newell presents the view of the life and death of Jesus that was held by Celtic Christians prior to the time when Christianity became the religion of the Roman Empire. It is a beautifully written book and a "must read" for thoughtful Christians to whom the doctrines of Original Sin and Substitutional Atonement are at odds with their view of a loving Creator in whose image we are all formed.Christ of the Celts: The Healing of Creation

Besides the actual Bible, The Total Money Makeover is the financial literacy bible that many Christians follow. I've had my share of debt in my life. I had undergraduate and graduate subsidized student loans. I also had a 30 year mortgage, that my husband and I paid off in 6.5 years- well before reading this book, mind you. My husband also had undergraduate student loans and he took a car loan in college. At this time, we have no debt at all. We own our home, contribute to retirement and college savings funds, own our (new) vehicles, and we donate to charitable causes that are meaningful. We live frugally now so that in the future, we won't be tied down to working forever... or will we anyway, in order to have healthcare? But I digress.I get miffed with people who won't take responsibility for their financial choices. I've done without a lot of things that everybody else my age seems to feel is essential. I use coupons, buy secondhand clothes, we don't take vacations, I don't go to the salon, and I could go on and on. We do this so we can save for our future, our kids' future, and so that I can stay home with our kids- at this point, my whole paycheck would go to childcare anyway.Ramsey's advice is good for people who have absolutely no financial sense. It can get them on solid financial footing if they have the self-discipline to follow it. However, it's not going to make them rich. Some of the advice might not even be that helpful, say, if they want to buy a home but have cut up their credit cards and thus have no credit history. I know few people who can pay cash for their home... and I live in Ohio, which is not a pricey place to live. The book also makes a lot of references to Ramsey's other programs, such as Financial Peace University. I think he's trying to double dip by doing that. The book proclaims to be "total" so *all* the information needed to make over your finances should be here. You shouldn't have to spend another couple hundred bucks to get the rest of the pertinent information. Also, it's not Biblical to get rich, which is something that seems to be glossed over. The idea that everyone can make a killing by following Ramsey's financial advice isn't accurate, either. There are going to be winners and losers in the stock market. I'm going to pass this book along to a family member who declared bankruptcy a few years ago and is considering doing it again. Maybe it will help the family member get a solid footing on what needs to be done without passing the buck.Disclaimer: I received a free copy of this book in exchange for writing a review. I received no other compensation.

After years of hearing and reading about The Total Money Makeover, I finally grabbed myself a copy and read the whole thing in one night. While I would not call myself a Dave Ramsey fan, there was definitely value in the book. He has 7 steps he suggests moving through:1. Save $1000Pretty straight forward. You need a bumper for the small emergencies. Shit happens.2. Debt SnowballThe debt snowball approach is something quite valuable that took reading about in this book to fully grasp and get behind. It’s quite simple in its brilliance actually. You make a list of your debts from smallest to biggest (excluding mortgage) and focus all of your financial effort on one debt at a time (making only the minimum payment on all others), working your way down. Once you cross one off, you divert all the money you were paying on that debt to the next, with the payment size growing at each step. We only had 2 debts (1 car loan and the consolidated student loans) so it wasn’t too complicated. Still, it was helpful. I had been focusing on building the savings but diverted my attention and resources to stamping out the car loan instead. I can see how this technique could be life-saving for people who are overwhelmed with debtors.A main tenet of his book is that we can and should all be debt-free. There is a lot that resonates with me about living a debt-free life and this is a message I hope more people hear and get inspired by. Minimalism and debt-free are very good friends. Though I’m not dogmatic or militant about it. There are times when debt has been advantageous in my life but we don’t take it lightly, only entering into it consciously, with eyes wide open and a clear plan.3. 3-6 Months Expenses in SavingsBuilding up and maintaining a savings of 3-6 months expenses is the next focus only after all debts are paid. Companies go under. Employees get laid off. Freelance work experiences a drought. People get sick. Life happens. You need an emergency fund to get you through the hard times. In today’s professional climate, this is even more essential than in the past because the old working model of clocking in at 20 and retiring from the same company at 55 is dead. (I recently read The End of Jobs, which I recommend if you want to read more about that.) 3 years is actually the sweet spot in terms of job satisfaction and performance for being at a company. If you’re changing jobs every few years, the transitions can be sticky. You need a buffer.4. 15% to Retirement (401K, ROTHIRA, Mutual Funds Investing)There is one line he hammers throughout the entire book over and over again: “If you will live like no one else, later you can live like no one else.” He means that if you live a shitty life in your prime, you might enjoy a nice life when you are old and retired. Most of his examples throughout the book glorify families in which the parents work 3 jobs and rarely see their kids but by golly, they might have a nice savings if they make it to old age running themselves ragged. This is the heart of his philosophy and it’s one I completely disagree with. My philosophy is definitely more in line with Tim Ferris in that regard who urges you not to sacrifice your present for a future that may never come in the 4-hour work week (Ramsey actually even throws shade at Tim’s approach in this book). Particularly when there are children involved. My kids would rather have us present and be happy, healthy, rested, and homeschooling with a student loan floating out there than have us be absent working 3 jobs while they are in school and daycare with no student loan. These years are so important and while being debt free and financially healthy is a priority (we don’t use credit, we snowball, we budget, we save, we contribute to retirement), it is not the priority.5. College Fund (ESA funded in growth stock mutual funds)I appreciate that he does include a bit about college not being a golden ticket. If you want to read more about our approach to college for our 3 kids, check out Sage Homeschooling: Wild and Free.6. Pay off MortgageThis is where I hop off the Dave Ramsey train entirely. I know someone who had 3 houses paid off and then the real estate market crashed and they lost everything. I don’t plan to stay in the same house my entire life and I am happy to purchase a property with a mortgage, fix it up with a tight budget and lots of elbow grease, and sell it several years later when we are ready to move on to a new adventure (freedom of mobility). Also, the nation’s average income ($50K) paired with the cost of housing in a major city ($710K in Seattle), don’t line up for buying a house all cash. Again, his mindset around this is painfully outdated. The person he is talking to gets hired by Blockbuster out of college, works there 35 years, then retires and dies in their rocking chair on the porch. Norman Rockwell called and he wants his financial advice back. That is just not the world we live in anymore.7. Build Wealth (invest)He claims the only way to get rich is to invest in the stock market.Overall, it’s a book worth reading. The first 3 steps alone should be knowledge every teenager launches knowing. The philosophy is not my jam and I could certainly do without the patriarchal overtones and bible verses, but a quick and easy read that adds value nonetheless.I was hoping for some budgeting inspiration but found none in this book. I’m presently trying You Need a Budget. We’ll see . . .
