We used this guidebook religiously on the West Highland Way! It did take me a while to acclimate to the style and format of the maps, but once I got it down I found it highly reliable. Many resources say that you don't need a super detailed map as the trail is well marked, but the book helped us plan our timing, meals and transportation way better than we could have without the detailed information. I was super neurotic and pre-tabbed all of the pages to reflect the sections we had planned, but even one tab to move on the page you are currently needing to use is helpful. The only thing I recommend is personal preference, the book outlines a few alternatives to the end of the trail, we followed a different route into Ft. William based on the recommendation that the ending was overly commercialized. The route we chose was kind of confusing and super hilly (cow hill trail or something like that). After a full day of 15 miles, I wasn't feeling that ending and would have preferred the flat easy entry into town. Granted, if you're feeling great, the views were quite enjoyable. Overall this book was our best resource on the trail!

Awesome book and glad I had it with me while hiking the west highland way. Most of the maps were right on, the “optional” routes are now the official routes, for the most part, and some logging had taken place so the final day was far more exposed than the book described, but this was 99% spot on with what to expect and trail markers. I will be buying more of these books in the future.

Just got back from doing the WHW, and we found this book very helpful for navigating a few of the tricky twists and turns where the trail comes into contact with civilization. The map annotations are brilliant - highly detailed and accurate. Whenever we need confirmation that we had taken the right path, this is the map we referred to. Buy it for planning, take it along for navigating.

This is an excellent guide book. We just finished walking The West Highland Way and this book was with us the whole way. The maps are twice as detailed as OS maps, and come with downloadable GPS waypoints. The section descriptions were most helpful. Although we didn’t need them, the list of accommodations looked thorough. We are thinking about taking another long distance walk in the UK, so I have ordered several other Trailblazer guides to help us plan our next walk.

This book is informative beyond my hopes. The authors give me, at sixty-six, the confidence to get out and see the Highland as can only be experienced and enjoyed while trekking. They anticipated my every question.

While sometimes containing more detail than I could digest, it was indispensable on the trail. And I'd say half the folks on the trail had a copy. Accurate, informative, and the hand drawn maps were super helpful.

great information and really can plan your trip on your own with the information provided.

Quality guide showing you a ton of hiking trails in the highlands.

“Tom Brown has lived and breathed—and researched and pondered—ADD for years, so it comes as no surprise that his new book is both reliable and innovative; tested and testing; authoritative and ground-breaking. This is a superb book. I recommend it highly!”—Edward Hallowell, M.D., author of Delivered from Distraction: Getting the Most Out of Life with ADD "Authoritative and ground-breaking.  This is a superb book.  I recommend it highly!"—Edward Hallowell, M.D., author of Delivered from Distraction: Getting the Most Out of Life with ADD (approved edit)  (Edward Hallowell, M.D.)"Dr. Brown has written an attractive and accessible account of the way that some findings from psychological science can be applied to understanding ADHD and its impact. People struggling with problems of organising themselves and concentrating will find much here to help them know and overcome their difficulties."—Professor Eric Taylor, Institute of Psychiatry, King's College London (Eric Taylor)"While rooted in science, this book goes far beyond the typical clinical explanations to get to the heart of the matter: living with AD/HD. Real people living with AD/HD will understand and embrace Dr. Brown’s "AD/HD Syndrome" and identify themselves and their loved ones on every page."—Evelyn Polk Green, Attention Deficit Disorder Association (Evelyn Polk Green)"Dr. Brown gives us valuable glimpses into the lives of people suffering from ADHD and explains the theory and science behind this complex disorder and the impact it can have on the lives of children, adolescents and adults. Readers will come away with new insights and a treasure trove of essential strategies to effectively manage ADHD and related conditions."—Harvey C. Parker, Ph.D., Co-founder of CHADD and author of Problem Solver Guide for Students with ADHD (Harvey C. Parker)"A timely, practical and much-needed text on a medical problem of enormous importance heretofore clouded by public misconception, scientific uncertainty and uninformed political debate. Brown provides us with a welcome entry into a lucid empirical discussion of the subject. His clinical rationale is exquisitely attuned to both the critical assessment of statistical fact and the unique human situation of each patient."—Joaquín M. Fuster, University of California, Los Angeles  (Joaquín M. Fuster)"Dr. Brown has combined contemporary neuroscience with very good clinical examples. He brings together the essentials of what is currently known about ADD/ADHD in a way that will be very useful for patients, for students and clinicians."—Joseph Sergeant, Free University, Amsterdam (Joseph Sergeant)"Attention Deficit Disorders documents Tom Brown's thirty years of listening to patients of all ages who tried, but could not ‘pay attention.’ Patients will recognize the quality of the deficits that have hampered them, and meet others with similar difficulties. Tom Brown's approach is not that of the DSM-IV and he does not shy away from controversy. This is the first book to take ‘focus’ itself as its primary focus, both clinically and in its summary of current science. This is in itself an important beginning."—Margaret Weiss, author of ADHD in Adulthood (Margaret Weiss)"Dr. Brown's book clearly describes Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder and its treatment. Through many stories, it clarifies what is known and what are myths and misinformation."—Mark Wolraich, University of Oklahoma Health Sciences Center (Mark Wolraich)"This book provides a vivid and lucid description of the many and varied signs and symptoms of ADHD across the lifespan; as a clinical resource, it will be useful to mental health professionals and lay readers."—Martha Bridge Denckla, The Kennedy Krieger Institute, Johns Hopkins University    (Martha Bridge Denckla)"In this book, Dr. Brown provides a compassionate understanding and rich clinical description of individuals who experience persistent and impairing problems with inattention and self-regulation in their daily lives—individuals who manifest Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD). In so doing, he casts a fresh perspective on the symptoms of ADHD provided by the medical system (DSM-IV), by highlighting the marked cognitive dysfunctions and revealing how both the behavioral and cognitive manifestations of ADHD impact on daily life and change across childhood, adolescence and adulthood. In essence, this book advises clinicians to pay attention to inattention."—Rosemary Tannock, PhD, The Hospital for Sick Children & University of Toronto, Canada (Rosemary Tannock)

This is not the first book I’d recommend to laypeople: it’s dense with references to the latest peer-reviewed medical studies, carefully-evaluated statistics about the prevalence of ADD in modern life, focuses less on individual case studies and is generally a more clinically-oriented work than Edward Hallowell’s Distraction series, Sari Solden’s Women with Attention Deficit Disorder, Kate Kelly and Peggy Ramundo’s You Mean I’m Not Lazy, Stupid or Crazy?! or Kathleen Nadeau’s ADD-Friendly Ways to Organize Your Life. Which means it may be the perfect first resource for a skeptic who refuses to acknowledge the validity of ADD, or someone with the scientific background to find this orientation more approachable. I would always give it to medical professionals involved in an ADD-abled person’s care if the provider isn’t familiar with ADD.Lauren Williams, Certified Professional Organizer, Owner, Casual Uncluttering LLC, Woodinville, WA, USA

As a psychiatrist that specializes in treating adult ADHD this is the one book I recommend to my patients (the ones that read books anyway). Brown is one of the leading researchers in ADHD and this book makes that research understandable to ordinary people. He describes symptoms in categories that actually make sense and stays away from academic jargon that discussions of executive functioning frequently involve. He debunks the nonsense and myths and gives you the truth straight up. He is also not afraid to recommend medication as the well-proven, most effective way to treat ADHD. It is nice to hear a psychologist who can not prescribe medications openly acknowledging and advocating for the use of medication (by the way - not all ADHD medications are stimulants). On his website he has a description of his model of ADHD (he prefers the older term ADD) that is about 1 1/2 pages long that I print out and go over with my patients who have been newly diagnosed - I tell them to buy the book if they want more details.

This is probably the most helpful ADD/ADHD book I have read (about 15 total). It is written very clearly and comprehensively for the non-medical reader. Brown's later book covers about the same material but is very scientific and intended for the medical reader. I make these comments as a retired psychiatrist with ADD, who self diagnosed himself at about age 70, 4 years after retirement! More parents, teachers and doctors need to know about this book.

The information is succinct and very good. A must read for parents. Not an easy book, so be patient.

Over the last two years, I have been immersed both professionally and personally in exploring the relationship between executive functioning in the brain and personal functioning out in the world. This book is one of the most accessible volumes I have found on the neurobiological aspects of ADD. I especially appreciated the chapter on co-occuring conditions. There are many related neurological conditions such as such as depression, anxiety, and autistic spectrum disorders, that combine with ADD to make an individual's situation more complicated than is usually presented in books. My only quarrel with Brown is in his enthusiasm for stimulant medication to the virtual exclusion of other treatments. Stimulant medications can be wonderful when they work. Even when they work however, the person with ADD can benefit from his one designed counseling, training, and treatment. With that caveat, I highly recommend this book.

As someone who deals with the challenges of of ADHD (diagnosed at the age of 53, thus I fall into the Adult ADHD category), I was very happy to find an audiobook and a kindle edition on this topic that I strongly resonated with, that I understand and can share with others. I either find a book but not the audio or kindle, the audio, but not the kindle edition, or the kindle/ebook and no audio and if I found the audio and kindle, the audio was not an unabridged version.Considering the audience they are talking about and trying to reach, anyone believing they have information to share should keep in mind that ADDers utilizes more than more way of processing information. Thus if one is going to write a book about ADDers with the goal of helping ADDers, should have the information available in all the popular forms of media.A Book -- hardcover or softbackUnabridged audio versionKindle and ebook

I am studying how to coach ADHD adults and teens. This is one of the best books I've read on this subject. I appreciate the case studies. Excellent.

The best book I've ever read about ADHD, and I've read a LOT! It was informative, easy to understand, and helpful. I recommend this book to anyone who is interested in or learning about ADHD.
