Cuauhtémoc Medina (Mexico City, Mexico) is an art critic, curator and historian with a PhD in History and Theory of Art, University of Essex, and a BA in History from the Universidad Nacional Autónoma de Mexico, Mexico City. Since 1992 he has been a full-time researcher at the Instituto de Investigaciones Estéticas, Universidad Nacional Autónoma de Mexico, and has taught at the Center for Curatorial Studies, Bard College, Annandale-on-Hudson. Previously, he was the first curator of Latin American Art Collections at Tate, London (2002-2008); director of the 7th International Symposium on Contemporary Art Theory, Mexico City (2009); and is one of the founders of Teratoma, a group of curators, critics and anthropologists based in Mexico City. His informative Foreword for this impressive collection of Mexican newsprint tear sheets brings into focus a significant gender identification struggle in Mexico.As he states, `The NOTA ROJA newspaper and the popular press are a treacherous terrain in the public sphere. In societies defined by deep structures of exclusion, either racial, economic or gender, as in Latin America, the media is similarly confined by cultural filters, religious prejudices, and political padlocks....By consensus this arena is defined by misrepresentation and the stereotypical. But, even the exploitative distorting mirror of the `nota roja' involves, through its photographic component, a complex interaction of gaze and desire.....The transvestites and transsexuals of the lower classes usually with mestizo or indigenous features, are taking part in an intricate and dangerous game of identity which reconfigures their ascriptions of race, gender and class.'And so opens this collection of images Susana Vargas has collected form `Alatma!'- a selection of key Mexican newsprint tearsheets, with the original layout and typography, each of which represents a mujercito, or "effeminate man," in a highly sexualized, objectified way. `In studying these representations of mujercitos, Vargas further traces Anglo-North American theories of gender/sex performativity onto Mexican society, only to discover the multitude of ways in which the relation between gender, sex, sexual orientation and desire is permeated with concerns of race and class in Mexican culture.'In Susana Vargas' illuminating and well researched essay she offers insights into the manner mujercitos have been presented. `These photographs show the mujercitos posing like movie stars or super models, as if modeling for a fashion magazine instead of a nota roja periodical...Through posing in their photographs, the mujercitos provide themselves the feminine subjectivity that the accompanying text and Mexican homophobic society denies them.'This book, primarily in Spanish because of its nature, is an important volume in the Gender Studies arena we are only now exploring.
