Years ago I saw the TV movie "Doublecrossed" about the government's involvement in using Barry Seal to transport weapons to the Contras and returning with cocaine which was sold on the streets of America with the support of our government. When Seal was arrested by police, he was promised by his handlers that they would arrange for his release. Nobody showed up in court for him and he was sentenced to do time at a halfway house, where it was guaranteed that he'd be killed and he was.Having been in law enforcement for many years, it was no secret that much of the drugs that were sold on the streets of America were also being brought into the country with the knowledge and full support of certain government officials. Mena, Arkansas, while Bill Clinton was governor, was known as the "Little Columbia of America." Clinton's brother Roger was a drug dealer and user, eventually being sentenced to prison, and pardoned by his brother Bill when Bill was President. Roger always claimed that Bill used cocaine and "had a nose like a vacuum cleaner," something that has been corroborated by others over the years. There was also a movie about an American journalist who was captured in Nicaragua and despite the pleas of his family in the US, our government did nothing to secure his release and he was executed in Nicaragua. HIs family felt and publicly stated that he had obviously seen something that our government didn't want brought to public attention. Shortly after the journalist's execution, the Iran Contra scandal was broken to the American people. I personally believe that the journalist found about the exchange of weapons for drugs that was set up by our government, exchanges that were handled by Barry Seal (a very talented, fearless pilot) and his crew of specially selected, Seal trained pilots. This book, while not mentioning the execution of the American journalist, definitely exposes the true nature of the Iran Contra affair, and exposes the players--Oliver North, George H.W. Bush, Bill Clinton, and the CIA. Nowhere does it mention Reagan and it is entirely possible that Reagan was ignorant of how the US was being paid back for the weapons they were sending to the Contras.Barry Seal proved to his attorney that he had a direct line to George H.W. Bush's office (while Bush was Vice President), his attorney dialed the number and was connected to the VP's office. The planes that Seal and his crew used to transport weapons to the Contras and returned with drugs were high tech planes equipped with instruments that only some govenment planes were equipped with. Seal kept records of his dealings with our government officials, agencies, and the drug cartels, making him dangerous to many people. After reading this book, it is very understandable why George H.W. Bush and members of his family voted for Hillary Clinton. For those who were surprised and how friendly Bill Clinton and George H.W. Bush were after both were out of office, this book explains their connection that went back years before George H.W. Bush and Bill Clinton were ever President of the US. When Oliver North testified that he needed a great deal of security around his home because he was afraid of the most dangerous man in the world, Al Gore asked him who he was so afraid of, and North responded, "Osama bin Laden." Gore laughed (naturally this was years before bin Laden was tied to terrorist acts against America), but after reading this book, bin Laden wouldn't be the only person North feared.I love America, but I also have no doubt that corruption has existed for many years among those elected to political office. This series of books are an interesting read, but difficult since conspiracies always have so many twists and turns that it's hard for anyone to "connect the dots." That's why conspiracies are usually so successful, particularly when run out of the highest offices in our land.

As an American Citizen, this book has made me realize that I need to research multiple sources before believing the information that the news makes public. Our countries leaders need to be held accountable for their actions, as they have corrupted justice and made our prison systems a profitable organization, instead of a place of safety and reform. I give this book the highest rating possible for its ethical approach to the issues of drugs and the governments exploitation of the people involved with them.

His sources for this book is a made for TV movie about Barry Seal, Oliver Stone's JFK, and a bunch of conspiracy theory websites. From that he crafts a book of bull plop. He also spends an inordinate amount of time on who killed JFK. SPOILER: in the first part of the book it is Lyndon Johnson who had JFK killed. In the latter half it was George HW Bush who had JFK killed. The author can't even keep his conspiracy theories straight.Save your money.

This book is so interesting. You will NOT be able to put it down. It's UNBELIEVABLE! It's one of those Art imitates life/life imitates Art stories. So good. I highly recommend this book.

If only one bit of the events narrated in this book are true (and I believe most did happen) it's enough to blow your mind. The systematic conniving, covering-up, corruption, and murders by the American government officials involved is a disgrace to democratic beliefs. America likes to blow its horn at third world countries denouncing their corruption but they can be just the same.A real eye-opener. I'd like to know more about where the author gets all his information and how well backed-up it is but congratulations on a book to put American politicians and government institutions to shame.

Wow. Talk about an eye opener. I was basically a kid when all this was going on. I really only knew the headlines of what was on the news back then; the War on Drugs, Iran Contra, Just Say No, the Columbian Cartels. The key element to an outsider’s perspective is that they see what the person living in the sphere of discussion doesn’t.
Shaun Attwood’s analysis of what REALLY went on during this time is nothing short of jaw dropping. The adage “truth is stranger than fiction” certainly lives up to its meaning. This book will make you seriously question the powers that be and it will certainly beg the question of whose interests our leaders really have at heart. American Made is a great read.Â

Make sure you vote every four years and post your political memes on your Facebook. Pay your taxes to the crown and go the speed limit. If this book doesn't make you question the current state of affairs in America then nothing else will.Shaun has the biggest brass cojones to tell the stories he does and risk his life telling the truth.

Shaun is a genius. Love this book as much as the rest. Can not say one is better than the others they all taught me valuable life lessons and this one will turn your world upside down (unless you already new how corrupt our leaders were)

Historical fiction has been one of my favorite genres and, even though I mostly read contemporary romances now, I enjoy reading an historical fiction novel every now and then. I had never read anything by Gemma Liviero before but I came upon this book and the description sounded like it would be a good read. I've actually read a number of fiction novels written about the WWII era from different points of view so I was interested to see how Broken Angels compared to them and I feel that it is a well-written novel about people who lived during one of the most horrific time periods. There are three main characters whose viewpoints alternate throughout the book. Elsi is a teenage Jewish girl living in a Polish ghetto who is quickly learning the horrors of war. She decides to join a resistance group who are planning against the Nazis but what happens to her when she does this is beyond what she ever imagined. Next is Matilda, a young, highly intelligent Romanian girl who has Aryan features (blonde hair and blue eyes) whose mother is forced by the Nazis to sign over the custody of her to Germany. The Nazis are kidnapping many young children with these same features and sending them to "centers," places where they are forced to become perfect German children...sadly, using any means necessary. Finally, Willem is a Nazi doctor who does not believe that what the Germans are doing is right, even though his father is a high-ranking Nazi official. Willem begins to formulate complex plans that make him appear that he is still working for the Nazis while in reality, he is working hard to set innocent people free. The lives of these three people soon become connected in the most unexpected of ways.I feel that Broken Angels is very well-written and seems to be thoroughly researched. I like how the viewpoints alternate between Elsi, Matilda, and Willem and sometimes it was hard to remember where that person's story left off but I think that the alternating viewpoints also helps to keep it interesting. Even though there were many times that I gasped in horror at the story (there is nothing extremely graphic in this book, but no matter how many different books I read about this time period, I can't get over what these individuals had to endure), I had a hard time putting it down. I really enjoyed Broken Angels and feel that it is a very well-written novel about three very different individuals trying to survive Germany during WWII. If you enjoy reading historical fiction about this time period or are looking for something new to read, I'd definitely recommend reading this book. It certainly isn't lighthearted but there is so much feeling within the words that you can't help but get lost within the pages.

Having read many books about Nazi atrocities, both fiction and nonfiction, it's tempting to think there is little left to learn about them. I think, though, that there is always more to learn. In this case, it's an opportunity to learn of the unique impact on women.Of particular interest to me are explorations of the motives of the people who were complicit, as well as the day-to-day impact on those deemed unfit for the new order. Broken Angels explores all of this, and does so in a way that draws the reader in, caring about the characters, wanting to know where it all leads. This is a highly readable fictional representation, but not an easy one. No detail is spared. This is not for the faint of heart. If you can read it, though, please do so.I acquired this book through a GoodReads giveaway. Not very many people tried to win it. I understand the reluctance to revisit a chapter of history that is so very grim and also so recent. But the more we understand about how the holocaust came to be, the better able we will be to recognize movement toward the unthinkable -- a repeat of history.

Broken Angels is a stirring story of Elsi, a young Polish woman who is part Norwegian and whose mother is Jewish; Willem, a handsome German officer and doctor, son of one of Himmler’s top researchers; and Matilda, a part-German child torn from her family in Romania. I suppose the title reflects the brokenness of each of these characters.Elsi and her family have been thrown into the ghetto. Her Norwegian father puts on a yellow star to show solidarity and one days goes to work and never comes back, leaving his wife and two daughters to fend for themselves. Elsi’s mother resorts to prostitution to support her children, the younger Leah, sickly and slightly handicapped. An unwanted pregnancy and botched abortion brings her, accompanied by Elsi to the hospital where Willem works in the women’s clinic.Matilda’s idyllic existence on her parent’s lavender farm suddenly turns a macabre turn when a Nazi officer forces her mother to sign her away to go to a school to make her a better German but in reality was no better than a prison where she was constantly punished and tortured. But Matilda is headstrong and fights to maintain her identity.Willem is a Nazi officer but was grappling with a moral dilemma. He is torn between his allegiance to his country and the pity and compassion he feels for the Jewish women he treats. He is able to save Elsi’s mother but Elsi’s waif-like appearance haunts him. Although Willem is a Nazi, he, and probably other Germans as well, did not agree with what Hitler and the Nazis did. He uses his position to rescue Elsi and Matilda and together make a family.Although the story is told from three different points of view, I didn't have a problem with it. Sometimes, it was a welcome shift after a gut-wrenching scene. I think the author did an exceptional job in showing how the war and its aftermath impacted her characters. The ending was unexpected and I think it was great that the story ended the way it did. This review is for an ARC from NetGalley.
