About the Author

William Wongso is a household name in Indonesia, known for his culinary expertise and the popular TV show William Wongso's Culinary Adventures. His pursuit to master his country's traditional cuisines began in 1972 with the opening of a bakery in downtown Jakarta, and continues today, in his role as chef and restauranteur. Through the years, Wongso's persistent hunger for more knowledge and skills has taken him to the great culinary schools around the world, including Le Cordon Bleu in Paris and the 'Ecole des Arts Culinaires et de l'Hotellerie in Lyon. He has also held the roles of President of the Indonesian chapter of the international gastronomic society Chaine des Rotisseurs, and President of the Jakarta chapter of the International Wine and Food Society. Wongso serves as a culinary adviser to Garuda Indonesia and leads the Food Diplomacy Program endorsed by the Indonesian Ministry of Tourism and Creative Economy, Ministry of Foreign Affairs, and Ministry of Trade. Part of the mission of the program is to bring 30 Indonesian traditional culinary icons onto the global stage. Born to a Chinese-mainland immigrant father who was a personal photographer of Indonesian President Soekarno as well as an avid cook, Wongso was raised in Surabaya, a city with major culinary credentials, where he enjoyed a childhood steeped in the best of both worlds — that of his Chinese heritage and that of his East Javanese localized heritage. I recently returned from two wonderful weeks in Indonesia and thought it would be great to put together a dinner party based on my experiences. I took a chance on this book, although it had not been reviewed yet, based upon a glowing review from Anthony Bourdain. Here is what he said "thrilling, enjoyable, and essential reading." I guess it's my own fault for not noticing that "cooking" is not mentioned. This is more of a reference book than a cookbook. It's more about reading than cooking. It goes 117 pages before it gets to the first recipe, and there are only about 35 recipes included.If I were a TV chef, thinking about opening an Indonesian restaurant, this book might earn a spot on my shelf because of it's extensive discussion of ingredients and its useful, if breezy, discussion of the various Indonesian provinces. But for my purposes, I'd like to see a chapter on each province with the food of that province covered in a whole lot of recipes. I'd like to be able to construct a whole meal from each province.

Had really high expectations from his book but it fell a little flat to me. I've met him in person a few years ago and he is really knowledgeable in Indonesian cooking which is why I started reading more about Indonesian cuisine. I have purchased other Indonesian recipe books and found them to be more informative and complete than this one. Flavors of Indonesia is at best a very nice food photography book, the information in it isn't anymore informative than other Indonesian cooking books that have been written years before. I would like to see more recipes than the handful thats in here and to go more in depth about the people and regions of Indonesia and their food specifics.

J. R. Ackerley was born in Herne Hill, Kent, in 1896 and educated at Rossall School and Magdalene College, Cambridge. In 1922 he met E.M. Forster and the two developed a close friendship. It was through Forster's influence that Ackerley left for India in 1923 to work as Private Secretary to the Marharajah of Chhokrapur, which resulted in Hindoo Holiday. We have to thank the English novelist E M Forster for making it possible for Joe Ackerley to visit India in 1923 to serve as Private Secretary to the Maharajah of Chhokrapur. The former princely state was actually called Chhatarpur but for his journal, Ackerley changed the name to Chhokrapur so as to disguise it. The name Chhokrapur evidently means “city of boys” in Hindi, the irony of which becomes clear as the story unfolds. Perhaps “story” is not the most appropriate word, for the book takes the form of a diary and records the author’s exceptionally astute and amusing observations. But really, nothing much seems to happen in the sleepy community. People potter around with little to do. And Ackerley makes the most of it and paints delicious pictures of the half-a-dozen individuals who drift into his diary.Despite his grand title, the Maharajah of Chhokrapur turns out to be a curious-looking character who as Ackerley remarks, “bore a strange resemblance to a Pekinese dog.” The book is peopled with an eccentric bunch of individuals, not least the Maharajah himself whom it appears has a penchant for young men. The author makes little mention of actually doing any work in his role as Private Secretary and when he is with the Maharajah (usually referred to as “His Highness”) the conversation drifts between philosophy, books and dancing boys; interests they share with considerable enthusiasm.There’s a great deal of conversation, much of it fascinating and some of it highly amusing. Ackerley has a lightness of touch in his prose and the conversations between His Highness and Ackerley are fascinating though no doubt embroidered for the sake of entertainment. There are some moments when I laughed out loud. This is an absolutely delightful and highly entertaining book with deft touches of humour and it gives a tantalising glimpse of a long-gone colonial India of the 1920s.Hindoo Holiday: An Indian Journal (Penguin Modern Classics)

this is a rare gem for anyone who loves India and is interested in its 20C history. Charmingly naïve and funny - Ackerley's account of his sojourn in the 1920s as "secretary" and companion to the maharajah of a small Indian princely state. Also enjoyable as a gay perspective from that era. I lent a copy years ago and did not get it returned, so I was delighted to find it available as an ebook.

Quick read but very little of substance.

The book is an extended essay stressing the role of emergent organization laws in nature generally and in physics in particular (where we assume reductionist approaches have had their greatest success). Laughlin argues (compellingly I thought) that the world is constituted by a hierarchy of physical principles of organization, which often cannot be derived from principles governing the parts, and which furthermore are sometimes insensitive to compositional detail. Laughlin presents examples starting with phase organization of materials, from the more mundane (water) to the exotic (involving superfluidity and superconductivity). He then goes on to argue, more controversially, that systems of physical description up to and including relativity are descriptions of collective or emergent organizational principles. Emergence is not just about biology, social sciences and the weather, it's about physics.The downside for me is that I found the book a bit annoying to read. I was put off by the many digressions and modestly amusing anecdotes and also some poor analogies (all meant to increase accessibility to the lay audience, I guess). Still recommended for those with interest in the topic.

... and deliberately provocative, as several other reviewers failed to realize. If I were a good deal younger, I'd describe Prof. Laughlin's humor as "snarky", but since that adjective isn't yet in my vocabulary I'll have to go with "sm*rt-*ssed". It's perhaps a sort of humor that tickles the funny-bones of science nerds most, rather like 'viola jokes' amongst us musicians, and the anecdotes almost certainly offend those readers who find they are the butts of Laughlin's humor. He is unrepentantly scornful of those he perceives as fools. But how can you resist his description of String Theory: "a textbook case of a Deceitful Turkey, a beautiful set of ideas that will always remain just out of reach. Far from a wonderful technological hope for tomorrow, it is instead the tragic consequence of an obsolete belief system..." Yeah! I happen to think of String Theory, if I have to, as Sudoku for Metaphysicians.The unifying theme of A Different Universe is that physical sciences have "stepped firmly out of the age of reductionism into the age of emergence." I won't attempt to parse that statement; it would be like giving away the end of a suspense novel.There are also moments of homiletic wisdom to be found, sauced with humor. In his chapter about nuclear science vs. applied nuclear engineering (think Hiroshima), Laughlin writes: "... self deception has consequences. Most of the time the effect is not as dire as warfare, but simply a degradation of the quality of life. These degradations include such happy institutions as road rage, divorce court, and excessively long faculty meetings." Make of that sermon what you will! It's not unamusing to find a Nobel-winning tenured professor at Stanford still picturing himself as Peck's Bad Boy or James Dean.Geneticists should be warned that Laughlin is particularly harsh about their methodologies, even though he grudgingly admits that his kind of physics is a good deal more like biology than like the physics of yesteryear. Antone who has invested her/his retirement funds in nanotechnology will also have reason to cringe; Laughlin regards nanotubes as microcosmic black holes that swallow research money and never release it.Proponents of "Intelligent Design" should be VERY careful not to leap to any assumption that Laughlin's ideas of emergent self-organization might support their beliefs. Quite the opposite: his Emergence utterly dispenses with any need, philosophical or scientific, for a Designer.Much of what Prof. Laughlin writes, and writes about, will be cutting-edge difficult for many readers, but those readers will be hard-pressed to find a more engaging and comprehensible account of quantum mechanics, indeterminacy, the Standard Model, and other such items of bedtime reading than A Different Universe. Buy it for the jokes, and you may stay for the insights.

I got this as a gift for a local associate who claims innocence of the cutting edge of physics, and the controversies that play out there. I had seen a video of the author delivering a lecture at Cambridge University, on the same subject, and found the thesis compelling. So when I found that he had written a book on the subject, I read it and was further compelled. Amazon has used copies of this book for very reasonable cost, so I've bought several copies to give out.

As with Wolfram's "A New Kind of Science", this is a book with valuable philosophical insights, which many reviewers dismiss because those are not physical insights. Hence the mix of 5 and 1 star reviews. In other words, don't come here to learn physics, but if you like "why" questions, then read this book.A book that makes people angry is not necessarily revolutionary, but revolutionary books do make people angry.

I read loads of science books and generally take away something of value from each of them, however oddly written they may be, but this book was really a huge disappointment. It is supposedly about the concept of "emergence," as used by physicists, but it barely pauses between its random sophomoric stories and pontifications to even define -- let alone explain -- that term before we're off on a long series of almost completely unrelated topics, as for example, when he spends a paragraph, for no apparent reason I can find, snidely dismissing the possibility of building a quantum computer, and that even though several primitive versions of that device are now in operation. Maybe if you know this field inside and out this book will make sense to you. If you are looking for an introduction to the disputes around "emergence," however, this is no place to start. P.S.: After writing all the above I had occasion recently to reread several parts of this book. There is one glaring exception to what I wrote before, namely chapter four, which explains the mysteries of standard phase transistions in materials, especially water. It is the best introduction to that topic I've read anywhere and deals only with the phsyics, eschewing the many silly stories about physics conventions etc. that ruin the other chapters. I recommend chapter four highly. But you don't need to buy the book to read it as it is included in the online version of the book, which an internet search will turn up quickly.

I have been studying Kabbalah for years, I was then introduced to New Hermetics by a former Kabbalah Teacher. Things in my life have been changing. Plus this book is written in such a way that when you reread it you even get more out of it. I have found myself dwelling for long periods of time over sections of its contents. Great meditations are in it and they change your heart.

I have just received the book and from what I have observed, it can be described as a " pot of gold". The front and back color has a lot to tell about the content. It has a perfect binding with meaningful artistic design. I think the writer deserve some credit here.

This book is remarkable for its nature. Essentially a how-to guide to all manner of practical magic, it could also serve as a decent training manual. The instructions are clear and straightforward and require no obtuse or superstitious practices. Its only negative, to me, is its emphasis on magic as a psychological process, which is not appealing to a more traditionalist occultist like myself. Despite this, its methods are practical and should work for any practitioner.

As someone who has dabbled in different areas of the "occult" from Magick to Yoga, this book would have saved me a lot of effort in the beginning. Newcomb's writing is intelligent, focused, and helpful in guiding along the new adept. Even in the earliest exercises of the book, one can see real visible results manifested in the material world. Though it would take someone a great deal of time to fully master every aspect covered, it's up to the reader to use common sense and not rush. I highly recommend this manual for anyone who wants to stop playing around and start making things work.

This is not the original publication of this book! It also does not state state which version or publication it is so buyer beware. When compared to the original publication in 1933 its is not in any way similar. I would not recommend it. I would instead recommend going to your local bookstore for a real copy of Woodson work, this is a fabrication.

it's formatted like an e-book but one of my questions is is it like the first edition? That part I'm not sure of as it doesn't specify in the book or the ad. It's not a big paperback like I expected it to be but maybe that's because I expected it and it wasn't a big book to begin with. EDIT: I got a hold of the publishers of this book and this book is not abridged also IT IS TAKEN FROM THE FIRST EDITION/PUBLISHING WITH NO EDITS OR OMISSIONS .

This book could have been written as an indictment of some contemporary school districts. Carter G. Woodson had a crystal clear understanding as to how the educational system of his time period was failing to properly educate young black children. This was written during the early part of the twentieth century, barely two generations after the abolition of slavery. Everything was an uphill struggle, but most blacks knew that without a decent education, there was no way black people could advance as a group. He points out in his book the many systemic factors that lent itself to the intentional miseducation of the children of color in the public school system. A fascinating work, and still timely, considering the problems that the public school system is still having nationwide, especially in the urban areas.

Where was this book when I was going to school from 1950-62? I could not put it down once I began to read it, because it reminded me of so much of what I needed in my growth and developement was not made available to me as a young person of color growing up in a segregated society, and many of those who think that we have arrived at a color-blind point in America need to read this book, and then compare it to what is happening with us today. The author was relevent then in his revelations and in his effort to open eyes and minds to the lack of knowledge of self, and is more relevent now, because, too many educated people of color find it even harder to succeed in today's job market and the available employment opportunities. We still allow others to control almost every aspect of our lives, including what we are to learn, think, and accept from the world in which we live and the institutions which influences the minds of our children. Morover, we continue to consume more of what others produce for us than what we produce for ourselves. It is time we become producers and traders of goods and services in this nation and in our communities, and we should insist that our children be taught skills that will help them to become self-sufficient and self-reliant. A college education means nothing if you cannot do more than just make a living, and if what you have studied is not marketable for more than teaching the same to someone else. Help someone to learn to produce something or provide a service that is needed by others in a world that is forever changing.

I gave this book four stars. The reason I gave this book a good rating, because the problems I read in this book about the mis education of the negro, still exists today. For example, black people still don't show one another respect especially if he or she has prosper in life. Black people still cannot take order from another black person for some reason but when you put a white person in charge, blacks will listen without no problems. Also black people do not have confidence in themselves and want to depend on the government ,which still make you a slave because you put in the hard work, you can accomplish anything in life. I'm a black man and I see this everyday and I'm sick of it. We don't shop we each other because we don't trust each other and blacks love to keep other blacks down instead of helping. I hope one day we can all come together but for right now, I know I sound pessimistic but it's not happening. Black people in the early centruy will be ashamed to see how the black people act today.

Every Black Person in America NEEDS to read this book a few times and regularly. Although written many years ago, it hits the nail of the head. This book will help you understand the internalized racism that we as African-Americans suffer; but more importantly, it provides a catalyst for healing the wounds of internalized racism. Please read it!

Basically, I was just re-purchasing a classic that I had already owned, but had degenerated. The education expounded on from Dr. Woodson is timeless, as he explains how African Americans have been deprived & misinformed of their real history in the American education system. It challenges you to do your own independent reading, as it basically enforces the notion of thinking for self. At times, it entices you to challenge a lot of what you have learned over the years in your respective history classes.This book is a must read for anyone of African American descent, and should be required reading for parents, and their children alike.

Our schools sytems will never put this on the packet reading lists. WE SHOULD. This book should be on every black persons shelf NOT TO JUST COLLECT DUST. An eye opener and informative. Now what are we going to do about this dilemma now that we can identify it and counter it? Something they really and truly fear. If we can get past our own fear distrust and envy of our fellow brothers ans sisters.

His first effort, The Hunt for Red October, sold briskly as a result of rave reviews, then catapulted onto the New York Times bestseller list after President Reagan pronounced it “the perfect yarn.” From that day forward, Clancy established himself as an undisputed master at blending exceptional realism and authenticity, intricate plotting, and razor-sharp suspense. He passed away in October 2013.

PROLOGUEFriday, 5:50 P.M., St. Petersburg"Pavel," said Piotr Volodya, "I don't understand."Pavel Odina squeezed the steering wheel tightly. He looked unpleasantly at the man sitting next to him in the passenger's seat of the van. "You don't understand what, Piotr?""You forgive the French," Piotr replied, scratching a woolly sideburn, "so why not the Germans? Both of them have invaded Mother Russia."Pavel frowned. "If you Can't see the difference, Piotr, you're a fool.""That's not an answer," said Ivan, one of four men seated in the back."It happens to be true," grinned Eduard, who was seated beside him, "but Ivan is right. It isn't an answer."Pavel shifted gears. This was the part of the nightly, half-hour commute to the Nepokorennykh Prospekt apartments that he hated most. Just two minutes out from the Hermitage, they had to slow as they neared the bottleneck at the Neva River. They were mired in traffic while his political nemeses were proceeding at full speed.Pavel pulled a neatly-rolled cigarette from his shirt pocket and Piotr lit it for him."Thanks, Piotr.""You still haven't answered me," Piotr said."I will," Pavel insisted, "when we've gotten onto the bridge. I Can't think and curse at the same time."Pavel swung the van suddenly from the center lane to the left lane, jolting the men to the other side. Having fallen asleep when they left the Hermitage, both Oleg and Konstantin awoke with a jolt."You're too impatient, Pavel," Ivan said. "What are you in such a rush to get home to, your wife? Since when?""Very funny," Pavel said. The truth was, he wasn't hurrying to get to anything. He was in a rush to get away from the pressure, away from the deadline that had consumed them for months on end. Now that it was nearly over, he couldn't wait to go back to designing computer animation software for Mosfilm.Shifting gears again, Pavel zigzagged between the rows of small Zaporozhets-968s, with their sputtering forty-three-horsepower engines, and the larger, five-seat Volga M-124s. There was also a smattering of foreign cars, though only government officials and black marketeers drove them; no one else could afford to. He and his comrades wouldn't even be driving this van if the TV studio hadn't provided it. The powerful Swiss-made vehicle was the only thing he would miss.No, that isn't true, he thought as he glanced west. He savored the sight of the Peter and Paul Fortress on the opposite banks of the Neva as the setting sun glinted off its tall, graceful spires.He would also miss St. Petersburg. He would miss the beauty of these blazing orange sunsets on the Gulf of Finland, the calming flow of the blue waters of the Neva, the Fontanka, and the Yekateringofki rivers, and the simple splendor of the many Canals. Though the waters were still somewhat dirty from years of Communist neglect, they were no longer thick with foul-smelling industrial waste as they wound through the heart of the ancient city, Russia's Venice. He would miss the majesty of the ruby-red Belozersky Palace, the gilt interiors of the Alexander Nevsky Chapel, where he sometimes went to pray, the towering golden onion domes of Catherine the Great's palace, and the peaceful gardens and cascading fountains of Peter the Great's palace, Petrodvorets. He would miss the sleek, white hydrofoils that skimmed along the Neva looking like something from a science fiction novel by Stanislaw Lem -- and he would miss the magnificent battleships that dwarfed them, coming and going to the Nakhimov Naval School on Aptekarsky Island in the Neva.And, of course, he would miss the incomparable Hermitage. Though they weren't supposed to wander in the museum, he always took time to do just that when Colonel Rossky was occupied. Even if someone did see him day after day, he was supposed to be an employee there. No one would give it a thought. Besides, a religious man Can't be put among the likes of Rembrandt's Descent from the Cross, or Carracci's Lamentation of Christ, or his favorite, the School of Ribalta's St. Vincent in a Dungeon, and not be expected to look. Especially when he felt such a kinship to the trapped but resolute St. Vincent.But he would be happy to get away from the work itself, from the stress and the seven-day workweeks and especially the watchful eyes of Colonel Rossky. He had served under the bastard in Afghanistan, and cursed the fate that had brought them back together for the past eighteen months.As he always did when he reached the bridge of the Kirovsky Prospekt, Pavel made his way to the outside lane, with its low concrete barricade and more intrepid motorists. He breathed easier as he settled in among the faster-moving vehicles."You want an answer?" Pavel asked, drawing hard on his cigarette."To which question?" Ivan joked. "The one about your wife?"Pavel scowled. "I'll tell you the difference between the Germans and the French. The French followed Napoleon because they were hungry. They've always put comfort before decency.""What about the Resistance?" Piotr asked."A freak. A reflexive twitch of the corpse. If the Resistance in France had been as strong as the Russian Resistance in Stalingrad, Paris would never have fallen."Pavel applied pressure to the pedal to keep a Volkswagen from cutting right and getting in front of him. Black marketeer, he guessed from the surly look of the woman. Pavel glanced in the mirror as a truck pulled behind him from the center lane."The French are not evil," Pavel continued, "but the Germans followed Hitler because they're still Vandals at heart. Give them time. Their factories will once again be turning out tanks and bombers, I guarantee it."Piotr shook his head. "What about Japan?""Also bastards," said Pavel. "If Dogin wins the election, he'll watch them too.""And is paranoia a sensible reason to vote for any man for president?""It's not paranoia to fear old enemies. It's caution.""It's provocation!" Piotr said. "You don't get behind a man because he's vowed to strike the Germans at the first sign of remilitarization.""That was only one reason." The road ahead cleared and Pavel sped up as he crossed the wide, dark river. The men shut the windows against the sharp wind. "Dogin promised to revitalize the space program, which will strengthen the economy. He'll build more studios like ours, and constructing new factories along the Trans-Siberian Railroad will provide cheap goods and new housing.""And where will the money come from to achieve these wonders?" Piotr asked. "Our little nest back there cost twenty-five billion rubles! Do you really believe that if Dogin wins he Can cut enough fat from the government and from foreign adventures?"Pavel blew out smoke and nodded.Piotr frowned. He cocked a thumb over his shoulder. "That isn't what I overheard back there. Number Two was talking to an aide about the thieves-in-law. That's where he plans to get the money, and it's a dangerous association to -- "Pavel reacted instinctively as the Volkswagen suddenly angled in front of him. He pushed down hard on the brake and spun the wheel to the right. As he did so, he heard a pop and thick green smoke began pouring from under the dashboard."What is it -- ?" Piotr coughed."Open a window!" one of the men yelled from the back as they all began to gag.But Pavel had already fallen against the wheel, barely conscious. There was no one steering as the truck struck them from behind.The Volkswagen was partly in the right lane as the truck drove the van into it. The left side of the van's front fender struck the car, skidding and sparking along its right side. Pointed toward the side of the bridge, the van hit the low concrete barrier and rode up and over, propelled by the truck. The right tire exploded, the axle hooked over the top of the barricade, and the van plunged nose-first into the choppy river.There was a hiss as it struck the water, the van standing upright for a long moment before falling over on its back. Steam and air bubbles rose from the sides, mixing with the dissipating green smoke as the van bobbed belly-up on the surface of the river. The rest of the van was entirely submerged.------------------------------------------------The burly trucker and the young blonde woman who had been driving the Volkswagen were the first ones to reach the shattered railing. They were joined by other motorists who scurried from their cars.Neither the man nor the woman said a word to each other. They just watched as the van drifted to the southwest, twisting slowly in the current, the air bubbles dwindling and the smoke now just a faint wisp. The vehicle was already too far away for anyone to dive in and attempt to look for survivors.The two drivers assured those who asked that they were all right. This single event signals that MI6 believes there is something unusual going on inside one of the world’s greatest museums. And whatever it is, it has nothing to do with the museum, and probably indicates something sinister going on in Russia. What is going on is an attempted coup in Russia by some of the old-guard that have teamed up with the military and the Russian mafia. This is a believable story that is fascinating to read!

There are multiple plots in fact to write this I had to go back and review the book since it is multi-layered in plots. It takes place in Russia and covers the infiltration of our spies and forces to pull off a plot of Russia's own military trying to take over the Government. The US has basically committed an act of war but there was good reason and they get in and out with being caught. There are several casualty's and a lot of action. This book will hold your interest through-out the whole book.

Slow, lacked action.Not the action one might expect in a Tom Clancy book.Was ok read for the road.

This was a good follow-up to the first book in the Op-Venter series. This book gives you more insight to the characters that were introduced in the first book. Highly recommend reading it.
