Besides having beautiful pictures, I was pleasantly surprised to find that this is a serious scholarly work about the history of tea gardens. It is very thorough, easy to understand even though it's scholarly (although the writing style isn't the most captivating -- this isn't pop lit), organized, and very useful for a student of tea or Japanese gardens.

Keane has done a great service to both those who are interested in gardens and those who are interested in the Way of Tea. This is a beautifully designed and illustrated book that will fulfill every requirement for proud display on your coffee table. At the same time, it is a serious look at the history of the tea garden, where it came from, its forms and purposes, its influence on other types of gardens and architecture. Keane is particularly to be commended for tracing the history of the tea garden and the development of its design throughout history. This is something that has been missing from the English literature about tea gardens and is a great help in understanding the function of the garden and the goals of its designers. This book is to be highly recommended for anyone with an interest in the Way of Tea or the development of garden design in Japan.

The book is essential for any library on the subject.

I use this book when I teach my smoking unit. I think the book is very well written. Every year my students reaction to this book says it all. The react and learn about the subject of the book, smoking. We have heartfelt discussions about the book and their own personal stories. My goal is that my students learn never to start smoking and to have some compassion for those who are trying to quit smoking.

Such a great book to teach children to never touch cigarettes! It's very important to teach the future generation and to raise awareness and make them realise how dangerous smoking is.

The real truth of this story is lost in the sensasionalist notion of it's topic, namely smoking. Obviously the authors are no shareholders of RJR or Phillip Morris. But, bury a bad-mannered girl who loses the ability to conduct her in a civil manner, by raising her hand to make her sentiments known for instance, in a topic about smoking, then all is well and good, right? Wrong. If this had been a book about anything else, we'd have been outraged at the manners of this child, yet, because it deals with second hand smoke, we tolerate it. For shame. Put this child in the corner, then let her voice her sentiments. Teach her some manners, then she can talk about others' and their right to smoke freely, particularly adults (whom she feels the need to criticize). A bad-mannered, foul-mouthed little girl, in need of serious civility.

I had been taught the MLA format since high school were it was ingrained in my brain to the point where it became second nature. This continued in college where MLA was expected. However I returned to college in a different state in a different part of the country (1600 miles away) and now here comes P.I.T.A APA. She is a horrible wench, the girl is school who everyone hates because she is SO PARTICULAR about everything and has to have her way. Her way or the highway. I hate APA--but I love this book! I was tired of getting docked 1/2 or even 1 point for not getting the format right and I am sorry but those Cite-generation websites don't work with college professors! I considered buying the professional APA manual but on a college budget I bought APA: The Easy Way instead. It was the best investment in a book I have ever made. Now I don't get knocked points because I am FINALLY getting the format right! This book is so easy to understand and they guide you step-by-step with relevant examples for each type of resource. Trying to get MLA out of my head was a struggle, but this book saved me by teaching me a new way to cite my resources and prevent me from being accused of plagiarism. If you struggle with APA (and even if you don't) buy this book and save your sanity (and points on your homework) you won't regret it!

I teach online psychology courses for a large for-profit university. I teach classes at all levels from lower division undergraduate to doctoral level students. I recommend this book to my undergraduate students because they are pretty much clueless about APA formatting (understandably), which is required in all papers. Ideally it would be nice if they actually used the APA publication manual but there is almost no chance of that. This is an accurate and easy to use tool for the neophyte academic writer. I use it myself for quick reference.I would not recommend this for graduate students because there is more to the APA writing style than simple formatting. At the graduate level, the university requires the use of the publication manual.

This book is a concentrated synopsis of how to format an APA paper correctly. I have referred to it countless times, and the section on formatting for Word (older and newer versions) is worth the price of the book alone! Yes, for more in-depth information the APA Manual is great, but it is cumbersome. For quick reference, this booklet is amazing and has saved my 3am sanity more than once. You won't regret buying this, even with APA information out there on the internet. This booklet puts all of the essentials in one place. Highly recommended for undergrads and grad students alike.

This books is a joke and a rip off of your money. The printing is almost as if the ink was running out and faint on many pages. Towards the last half many pages are crooked in the printing and several have portions where part of the information is cut off. Then there are the pages that are stuck together and the binding that basically ripped off as soon as I opened the book all of the way. Opened it maybe 10 minutes ago and I’m not the kind of person who rolls the cover back.

I purchased this book as well as the full APA manual. I’ve gotten a lot of use out of this book while writing my papers for school because it’s very concise and easy to read. The full APA manual is a bit wordy and has lots of information, so it’s been useful to have a quick guide for references and in-text citations. However, I will say that I have needed to break out the APA manual a few times to for more in-depth explanations, so I do recommend buying both for other students that will be using APA style frequently.

If you do not want to purchase the full APA Manual, this is an ideal alternative. This book is short and compact with information. Everything you need to know is in this book along with examples of how to write in APA. Would definitely recommend if you do not want to purchase the actual manual and want to save a few dollars.

This is a must have if you don't want to get nick off for points when your doing your references or citations. After a few times you will get the hang of it, but for now-have this handy!! I write papers once a week and have been doing it for several years. I always used a web based informational site or got ahold of student services. But this is the route to take. Don't take an advanced level class without it!. They expect you to know this stuff.

I LOVE this manual. It's my go-to for every paper! I have the full APA manual, and there's always Purdue Owl- but I really do LOVE having this on hand! It absolutely covers the basics in a very clear, practical way, and is perfect for student papers.

Beautiful and varied visual references and good pictures. There are similar books that are primarily black and white but this has plenty of color plates.

Englishman Owen Jones first published his monument to design, the Grammar of Ornament, in 1856. It was originally published in installments for subscribers. Jones's illustrated plates and design motifs drew from nineteen different cultures including the ornament of Oceania, Rome, Byzantium, ancient Greece, Renaissance Italy, Rome, and Moorish Spain.The Grammar was adapted to architectural decoration, fabrics, textiles, tile design, furniture and wallpaper during the second half of the nineteenth century. It has remained influential among designers worldwide.The quirky colorways are decidedly of another era and worthy of study. I have effectively used them to thwack my creativity out of occasional dead ends or potholes. This is a respected, classic reference. It is deserving of space in every designer's reference library.

Not a good printing.Paper seems to be plain office paper quality. The printing looks like it was done with a regular ink-jet printer. The quality is passable, but barely; a general muddiness to the images and the color quality is muted. Some of the designs are very hard to see due to the colors not being vibrant enough.

A classic reference book! I use it all the time for architectural details and patterns for clothing when I am illustrating a historical scene. I used to own the hardback with the thick, glossy plates. This paperback version is light and compact and so the images suffer a little in translation. I still go to the library for the hardback, but for home, this is terrific.

I was told by a professional, that the trick with this book is to get the Dover edition, which I did and it is really so great! First of all, the seller listed the condition as "used - Good", when in fact, it is really "Like New". What a pleasant surprise! The Color Plates are all there and just beautiful. All are labeled with the plate number and the origin. This book has just the ornament plates - nothing to read about them but very beautiful and interesting for any artist or crafts person. Might be nice to get a companion book with the history of these different beautiful designs but mostly I just love looking at them and taking them in.

An absolute must for any one interested in art or the history of art. This book has been considered a 'must have' by artist since the late 1800's....still as current at it was when it was compiled. I work in glass and leather and I reference this book regularly. Before the internet and Amazon this was a very, very difficult publication to find and buy. If you're looking at it on this site you need to have it in your artist library.....nuff said!

I have seen a hard-back printing from the late 19th century of this book so was disappointed in this version...but still includes some wonderful patterns.

This book is excellent for artists, web designers,students. there are well chosen designs of many countries and eras and more than just a few for each catagory.It is a reference book that is a total must.
