We owe a debt of gratitude to Tim Boyce and Vanderbilt University Press for bringing this remarkable work back into print. The thoughtful historical annotations underscore Nansen’s credibility and validate the images and events portrayed in the secret diary. As the child of Holocaust survivors, I recognize the importance of first-hand witnesses in Holocaust education. Holocaust survivors are nearly gone, dying of old age and leaving a vacuum that threatens to be filled by Holocaust deniers. This book is an antidote. Odd Nansen had a gift for translating both mundane and horrific observations with an uncanny lilt and unwavering candor. His words seem to flow with other-worldly clarity and his sardonic style can also be appreciated in his documentary sketches. By telling his own experiences and recounting reports he elicited from newly arriving prisoners, he has provided a singular personal account of the progress of World War II. The result is a remarkably readable epic that should be passed on to future generations.

Not only is Odd Nansen's diary engrossing, Timothy Boyce's introduction and detailed footnotes make the read even more fascinating. As soon as I began reading Mr. Boyce's introduction, I knew he had committed himself to a painstaking project that benefits the reader. His introduction sets the stage for what is to come and gives the reader the historical perspective to begin to understand the politics and reality of Norway during WWII. I am halfway through Odd Nansen's diary and read every footnote written by Mr. Boyce. These make the diary more chilling and real-they do take time to read and take in, but I have been so moved by them in the book, I wanted to encourage the reading community to read this newly edited diary-including the footnotes. Odd Nansen's original drawings brings the brutality right in front of us as well as a glimpse of grace to an otherwise bleak existence. Thomas Buergenthal's preface is moving and shows how one person can make a difference. If comfronted with such a dire situation as both Odd Nansen and Thomas Buergenthal faced while imprisoned in Nazi concentration camps, I hope I too would have the ability to be kind and compassionate to others. This is an ongoing lesson for all of us.

Seriously? Some readers complained that the diary is “boring” and “makes the camp sound quite comfortable”! What were you thinking and reading? Yes, Odd Nansen and the Norwegian prisoners were treated VERY differently from others, particularly eastern European and Russians. They were basically considered Germanic and, therefore, given subsistence rations (for the most part); allowed Red Cross packages (although much had been pilfered by the guards); were allowed to send and receive letters; were in the best quarters the specific camp had to offer; got the best jobs (i.e. weren’t placed in the forced hard labor gangs unless they were being punished for some infraction of the rules and if so, were there for only short periods of time); punishments were relatively light compared to other prisoners, etc. Because of his privileged treatment, this permitted Odd Nansen the time, the resources and the clarity of mind to author an objective 3rd party view of the workings of the concentration camps in which he was incarcerated for three and one-half years. And the capability to smuggle the contents of his diary out of the camps. Under the circumstances, I certainly wouldn’t expect an upper class architect from a famed family (the explorer Fridtjof Nansen was Odd’s father) whose world has been turned upside down to spend too much time carefully editing his thoughts and observations, They were being written on stolen paper and secreted in various areas of the barracks until they could be smuggled out of the camps. And if the activity was found out, (which was, indeed the case, once) Odd would be liable for severe punishment and, perhaps, execution. So, I think he did a wonderful job of writing a diary which he believed only he and close friends would ever read.And as far as the camp living conditions being “comfortable”, just wait until you get to the later chapters. All the brutal inhumanity of the “master race” is evident as well as the degradation of individuals in the quest for self-preservation. All in all, a remarkable diary from a unique perspective.

Although as a Norwegian he was spared the worst of the atrocities, he was up close with all of it. In an almost miraculous way he was able to keep his daily diary and successfully smuggle it out. This book collects his writings just as they were written. As you read it you watch the increasing horror and brutality of the camps; watch his moods rise and fall; and witness his vain hopes for an early end to the war or for his early release. Nanson is an incredible writer and artist. The book has both text and illustrations. It is very readable and the occasional drawing (done in real time) extraordinary. The book has hundreds of notes explaining who his prison mates were, what happened to them, and what was going on in the war at the time he was writing. This is an unusual and timeless book.

I bought this book in the summer of 2015, studied it, and then traveled the first 60 or 70 miles of the trail (from Old Forge, New York to Long Lake, New York) with my 19-year-old son. We had the trip of a lifetime, traveling at a leisurely pace in two kayaks, and I would strongly recommend this book and this journey to anyone interested in canoe and/or kayak trips. I plan to continue doing additional sections of this lovely route each summer -- it's that good. The Adirondacks are pretty, full of wild places and cute towns, and the swimming and fishing were tremendous. We caught fish every day, swam in every lake, and found ample camping everywhere we were.Before stumbling upon this book, I'd never heard of this route. I was surprised by how little publicity this route has had, since I've read quite a lot about many of the other through-paddling-routes in North America. As for hiking routes, the Appalachian Trail and Pacific Crest Trail have so many books written about them, and kayaking routes through the San Juan Islands and canoe routes in the Boundary Waters are known by many. This NFCT is a lesser known trail, having been pioneered just in the past 20 years. This newness is not a detractor, however, as the trail is very well thought out and sign posted along the way. Small towns have nice sign boards marking the route, complete with info bulletins and maps, and the various carries are well marked.The book is composed by multiple through-paddlers, all of whom offer various insights about the route, fishing, plants, wind, etc. It's a great joint-venture and a substantial, interesting read.A note on the carries/portages: As two pretty strong guys, we found some of the carries quite challenging. Partly, this was because we didn't bring wheeled-carriers with us. It was also partly because we insisted on carrying both boats in a single trip. However, let me just suggest that you plan your route with attention paid to the length and number of carries on your trip. You can easily find sections of this route with very few and short carries. You can also find sections with many .5 to 1.5 mile long carries. So planning is crucial if you don't want to carry your stuff too much. Of course, the entire route requires about 50 miles of over-land travel, but if you're doing the entire route you're tough and ready for that, right?Note that there is a very detailed NFCT website that you can access online. On that site, detailed maps and route information is easily accessible. The book is more of a narrative about the trail, however, and I see the book as a very valuable supplement to what is online.A note about maps: After studying my copy of this book, I went out to EMS to try to find some detailed maps. Yes, there are detailed paper maps that correspond to every leg of this journey. However, I found the maps for the New York State portion of the trail to be a bit expensive for me. If you have the money, buy the maps -- they're nice. If you're a bit cheaper, you might end up doing what I did which was to buy a copy of the New York State Recreation Atlas (National Geographic Map). I simply tore out the pages that covered the part of the route we were doing, then carried those pages in a couple of ZipLoc bags. These maps were great and we never got lost.Any problems with the book? We found the book very useful. In fact, it was indispensable. However, there were of course things we discovered for ourselves along the route. For instance, one carry early on in the route (just 12 miles from Old Forge) ended up being unnecessary to do, as we were able to scoot and push our boats up a little beaver-dammed creek, walking via the stream in a spot that the book's authors told us to carry our boats. This ended up being very fun for us, but I share this just as a reminder to any reader that this book is a guide that should be taken as something other than a 100% perfect "how-to" for this trip. Lakes that are described as windy ended up being calm for us, and vice-versa -- but that all added to the adventure and sense of discovery. I wish it included the contact details for the groceries, bakeries, B&Bs, and other services it refers to, so they are readily available while off and on the trail.I enjoyed reading the book and planning for my first trip on the trail. I encourage you to plan a trip too. Stay safe and wear a life jacket.

Now that the detailed guide is out and in conjunction with the NFCT maps and on-line assistance a trip to plan and meet your customized needs or preferances has become a lot of fun. While all this information may take a little of the wilderness out of the trip, it allows the experience to be both safer and rewarding: as long as you do it.

It was helpful to read about the portion of the trail that I was going to be paddling. The one issue I had was that the description didn't reveal any challenges with rocks and rapids during lower water levels in an upper portion of the segment described as a "family paddle". My canoe took quite a beating on the rocks.

Great maps and notes on the routes

I have hiking guides for the AT, and this book does the same for the canoe. excellent. Gives me something to read and then plan from.

For me trip planning goes through distinct stages. The Northern Forest Canoe Trail guidebook addresses each stage.Initially I explore destination ideas, then narrow in on a region, then focus on the trip I can do with time and resources available. Introductory text in the guide provides a sweeping overview of the region, including human and natural history. Now I'm hooked on the idea. The authors have done the work for me in narrowing the trips with a handy listing by categories such as "for families or beginners," "wildlife-viewing trips," and "paddling-hiking/biking combinations."Time for packing and logistical details. They have a pre-trip planning section and trip put-in/put-out information.On the water, suddenly that boring to read at home text of the route details (e.g., "...approach to the dam, which is dangerous because of exposed metal rebar in the river...") is the center of my focus! Critical point by critical point, the guide helps me make safe route choices and alerts me to interesting features I might otherwise miss.The waterproof section maps (sold separately) complement the book.This book was written by several authors, each sharing their expertise for segments of the route. All write well and the guide flows together nicely; however, at least one is an exceptional writer.My only suggestion for improvement would be that the guidebook be plastic spiral bound so it could rest open within a zip-lock plastic bag for field use. I don't want to be thumbing for the right route section each time I review the guide while underway.

I have several Ted Dekker novels and they are all entertaining and thought provoking. 'Thunder Of Heaven' is no exception.Dekker has blended an action plot involving terrorists with a nuclear device, romance, and spiritual themes. I am not one who enjoys romance, but the author does it in a way that is not obnoxious or overdone.The action rolls along at a good pace and keeps the reader's interest throughout.There was one error that should have been avoided. This may be somewhat of a spoiler so read further at your own risk. When one of the characters is imprisoned for a terrorist plot, he is located in the 'Canyon City Correctional Facility'. A participant in international terrorism would not be incarcerated in a local or state facility. It is a federal crime so he would be in a federal prison. With the type of crime and skill set/threat level possessed by this person, he would likely be housed in a United States Penitentiary (USP). This may not be a huge issue, but I think that technical accuracy is important in a good novel.In spite of that one issue, I would recommend this book as well as any others I have read by Dekker. He is a highly skilled author who keeps one's attention.

I became so emotionally invested in the characters lives! I want the love, the salvation to continue. What about David? Did he know God's love? This is a story of heartbreak, action that keeps you at its heals and live! God's love! I have truly enjoyed this series. Thank you Ted Dekker

Suspenseful with twists at the end. Revealing and thought provoking. Enjoyed the concept grace and God's love defeats the evil.

The only problem I had with the book was it's too short. The story suffered because Ted was trying to wrap things up in too few pages. Beyond that I liked it very much.

Love is passionate about God. This book by Ted has a way of opening ones eye's to what it means to abandon oneself to the true love of God. The drama and adventure will take your breath away and you will fly.

This is one fantastic, mind boggling novel. I always thought the writing of Frank Peretti was exquisite. This is beyond anything I have ever read. Never in my wildest dreams would I have foreseen the ending. Given an hour I couldn't say enough good things about this man's writing style!! Superb.

Not a bad read but I liked the other books better

One of my favorite books. I have read all three in this series. I liked them so much that I bought the sets for others as gifts.

Dewey Thorbeck obtained his Bachelor of Architecture from the University of Minnesota and a Master of Architecture from Yale University. He then won a Rome Prize Fellowship and studied in Italy for two years. Very interesting read...Goes quickly, each chapter is like a short story. Great if you are interested in the origins of human life and what it is that makes us human.NOTE: Early in the book, Diamond makes an argument as to why humans and neanderthals could not have interbred. However, since this book was written (1990's), DNA evidence has proven that humans did breed with neanderthals.

What I fail to see mentioned in any of the reviews thus far is the fact that this book (`The Third Chimpanzee') is essentially identical to a previous version under a different title by Jared Diamond, namely," The Rise and Fall of the Third Chimpanzee: How Our Animal Heritage Affects the Way We Live" circa 1991. Interestingly, the reviews of that book (`The Rise and Fall') also fails to mention that it is a previous version of this updated book (`The Third Chimpanzee'). Upon comparison, the differences appear to be quite minimal; the general thrust is identical. Nothing about this relationship is mentioned at the Jared Diamond page either. However, please be aware that with very little effort the older version (`The Rise and Fall') can be found in a free PDF format.

Jared Diamond is a rare beast. He is an unabashed liberal but he transcends that and is as honest a scholar as one can find. He follows wherever the evidence leads him and reports it forthrightly. I do not think he has made the case for all of these themes but this is perhaps the best book of one of the most brilliant scholars of the human condition.

At this point, the entire world has read Jared Diamond's Guns, Germs, and Steel: The Fates of Human Societies and Collapse: How Societies Choose to Fail or Succeed. The question about The Third Chimpanzee: The Evolution and Future of the Human Animal (P.S.) is whether it is worth reading after reading Diamond's other two books.I have to say undoubtedly yes. This book, like the more recent ones, proposes answers to some of the biggest questions about humanity. Thus, even though the book is outdated, The Third Chimpanzee is great at both asking the important questions and explaining a process for answering them. The book covers everything from human language, sexuality, drinking, agriculture, and geopolitics through the analytical lens of evolutionary science. Thus, Diamond finds more interesting (and probably accurate) answers than those of philosophers, anthropologists, and political scientists addressing those same questions.Another benefit of this book is that it is actually broader in scope than Diamond's more recent books. The latter chapters of the book deal with the same subjects as Guns, Germs, and Steel (why some civilizations grew rapidly) and Collapse (how civilization risks its existence through ecological destruction). However, the first half of the book, deals with different topics, from evolutionary explanations for alcoholism to why humans have sex in private. In fact, if you only have time to read one of Diamond's book, I recommend The Third Chimpanzee as it includes a broader range.This addition of the book also includes a useful postscript which addresses some of the advances in our understanding of these topics since the book was first written.

It is obvious from reading this book that the professor has accumulated a great deal of knowledge from various sources including his own field experiences in places such as Papua New Guinea. The Further Readings section of the book also testifies to this fact. Jared Diamond has put all this accumulated knowledge to use in formulating the theories he has put forth in this book.Part one traces the development of this "species of big mammal" through its evolutionary history. He devotes a chapter to the Great Leap Forward -a topic of great interest to me. A number of things that profoundly affected the human species reputedly occurred during this interesting period.Part two discusses human sexuality, adultery, mate selection, and growing old. In many of the discussions throughout the book, an attempt is made to relate human behavior with some similar behavior found in the animal world. As stated in the book "parts one and two discussed the biological foundations of our unique cultural traits."Part three delves into how we are uniquely human and distinct from the animal world. Here he discusses the bridge or gulf, however you wish to view it, between language of humans and the ways in which animals communicate. He follows this with an interesting discussion of the development of language in human society. There is an attempt to relate human art to some animal precursors, a discussion of the mixed blessings of agriculture as well as why we engage in harmful practices.In part four we learn about the effects of geography on civilization, the Proto-Indo-European language (PIE) and development of the Indo-European language, the "linguistic steamroller," and genocide - an attribute notably ascribed to humans.Part five finally elaborates on the "Golden Age that never was" referring to the fact that "preindustrial societies have been exterminating species, destroying of habitats, and undermining their own existence for thousands of years." So this kind of behavior is nothing new to humans.
