Many books designed to introduce Christian apologetics (e.g. William Lane Craig's "Reasonable Faith" or "On Guard", Frank Turek's "I Don't Have Enough Faith to be An Atheist", Peter Kreeft's "Handbook of Christian Apologetics", etc.) focus primarily on discussing arguments for Christianity and responding to objections. Don't get me wrong, they are very helpful for what they intend to do, which is to demonstrate a rational case for Christianity; yet these texts fail to mention the other side of Christian apologetics, which is the character of the apologist. In Apologetics at the Cross, Dr. Joshua Chatraw and Dr. Mark Allen present a holistic description and demonstration of Christian apologetics in clear and understandable terms. They build a strong biblical foundation for apologetics and include a great (albeit brief) survey of Christian apologists past and present. They also cover the traditional introductory topics, such as the differences in apologetic methodology, common objections to Christianity, and common arguments in favor of Christianity.The unique contribution of this book is their emphasis on the character of the apologist, simultaneously dispelling common misconceptions about Christian apologetics and displaying a beautiful vision of Christians who are both loving and persuasive. Moreover, the writing style is simple enough for laymen/laywomen to understand, but the authors also included footnotes and recommended reading throughout the book for people who want to go deeper. In sum, I cannot recommend this book highly enough, and I hope that many people will use it as a foundation for their own evangelistic ministries.

My favorite aspect of this book was its practicality. While it does cover the essential elements of an introduction to apologetics (e.g. systems, arguments), it aids the reader in (1) engaging with the average person (2) where they are at and (3) on the issues that are of importance to them, and then (4) naturally weaving the appropriate apologetic argument into the dialogue. Chatraw and Allen also propose an apologetic approach that transcends apologetic systems (e.g. Classical, Evidential, Presuppositional, etc.), highlighting the best of each system and utilizing the methods relevant to the dialogue at hand.The book is an excellent read and very accessible. I highly recommend it.

Excellent content. But the quality of the binding and the pages are poor, the binding creaks when opening the book as if bad glue, and the pages are like newspaper quality. Did I get a correct copy?

The author showed that while facts and figures type evidence has it place we need to love the person we are talking to enough to listen to their concerns and then show that the Christian answer to these concerns is the best choice. Well done.

Well done and really good for basic intro classes

The approach and effect of this book aligns wonderfully with what it counsels: the effective communication and defence of the Gospel of Jesus Christ, centered on the Cross of Christ in all its glory and grace.

Every chapter deeper I got into this book the more it exceeded my expectations. Perhaps I expected that since this book is a textbook it would be a little stale, but I would now rate it as valuable as a read as it is a textbook. One reviewer said this book uses the template of Jesus crucified and risen in setting out to defend the faith rather than the Gospel which is used in most cases. That struck me as a non-distinction, which also lowered my anticipation, yet this book has effectively surveyed the past, brought us to the present, and stayed true to the Word of God.The first section laid the foundation for apologetics in four chapters. That includes definitions, proof texts, examination of various approaches, and a fine review of the history of apologetics. These chapters teach us much, start the ball rolling on our grasping apologetics, and enlighten us on the successes and failures of apologists in the past. There’s also much to learn about how the culture at the time affected how apologetics was done.The next section digs into theology in relation to apologetics in five chapters. Another pass is taken on the various approaches of apologetics so that we might glean what is good from each one. You will learn how far various methods can go, and where they might let you down in dealing with another person. I felt the chapters were ideal in helping pull out what was best from what apologists of the past have done. There’s also much emphasis on our living out our faith as a key in apologetics. I fear that is too often missed. In this theological section, apologetics are brought to the foot of the cross. Important information like how our sin nature corrupts human reason, our unrealistic expectations, and the absolute necessity of humility in apologetics. We are also taught to look at the whole person which will use reason to aim at the mind but will also look at the heart, or the whole of the person.The final section looks at the practice of apologetics in four chapters. These chapters had brilliant insights into our age. What we call postmodernism, they call late modernism, but in any event, our times create new challenges in apologetics. The incredible amount of spin that goes on in our culture makes people think that our presentation of the Gospel is but our attempt to spin the facts to gain something from them. The authors give wonderful suggestions on how to deal with that difficulty in the most effective way. Kindness and humility are still essential.There’s no doubt that this book beautifully succeeds in its advertised goal of being a quality textbook. To my mind, it too would win out as one of the best possible books for us to have to use in our own study of apologetics. I guarantee you it will be one of the first ones that I will reach for!I received this book free from the publisher. I was not required to write a positive review. Beautiful illustrations and the writing is much better compared to the author's three treasury of Greek, Egyptian, and Norse mythologies. As a fan of mythology and fairy tales, the tales of 1001 night is a great classic and this book is a great addition to my book collection. It is also something my little cousin and nieces would enjoy during bedtime.

The book is BEAUTIFULLY DONE! The graphics are simply stunning! The stories are NOT for small children since they were written from the perspective of a different culture, (Arabian) and time. As a teacher, I suggest they would be best read aloud and used as a conversation starter. I gave it to my two teenage grandsons after traveling to Egypt with them and seeing a "magic lamp" just like the one Ali Baba had in the stories. I had a similar book a child, and still remember the impact it had on me.

Received book today. Beautifully done. The illustrations are unbelievable. I have read about 20 of the tales. I'm not sure this is a children's book as I think the stories are scary for young children and the pictures might add to that feeling of goblins and scary monsters. I think parents will have to decide what age appropriate stories are for their children.

The stories are interesting to me (Grandma) and to my 11 year old grandson. It is always nicer when you can enjoy the books you are reading aloud. The illustrations are magnificent and I'm actually excited to take a break from his home schooling and read this delightful book to him ( and myself!)

Given to my reading mentees to encourage them to read during the summer break.

If you are a musical theatre teacher, student, pianist, director, musical director or choreographer, you will find this book to be really informative and useful. Joe Deer and Rocco Dal Vera have broken down the process of approaching musical theatre in an intelligent, clear and creative way without being dry or overly technical. I devoured this book joyfully (and honestly am still working my way through it)and found many thoughts, exercises and ideas that have enhanced my abilities as a teacher. This probably one of the absolute best books of its kind, standing far above any others I have read on this subject. You will not regret purchasing this excellent book. So grateful that one of my colleagues recommended this book!!

I teach a musical theatre class. Prior to this, I taught more history of musical theatre, but this book is an amazing resource to help with the specifics of musical theatre acting.

After a 40 year business career, I have fortunately been able to return to my roots as a teacher of theatre. Forget the title, Deer and Del Vera have written a comprehensive and understandable guide for acting, period. Most guides to acting in "straight" drama should have such clarity and context. It is a gem for those of us who have discovered it.

There is an investigation into the how and whys of this murder that is revealed through various character perspectives, and, along with these perspectives we get a deeper sense of racial tensions that have consumed much of this community.I was really lukewarm about Gaines' A Lesson Before Dying, but really enjoyed A Gathering of Old Men. I thought it was a powerful book with a powerful message about racial conflict/injustice and Gaines writes in a very symbolic, poetic way. I really thought the varying character perspectives really enhanced the viewpoints. I also thought the characters were complex and very realistically developed given the circumstances of the plot.One of the key themes that drives the novel is the idea of change, or moving forward. Change can come in various forms. There are points where several of the characters focus on the idea that we need to move on from old ideas. We need change; we cannot simply follow blindly ideas of the past that out of accord with racial harmony. There is a disconnect in racial harmony; and, therefore many character take a stand, both literally and symbolically, against this disconnect, this disharmony.A powerful book with an important message about racism in the deep South.

This is a classic that I had never read. The novel is set in Louisiana in the 1970's, and it involves a white man being shot. A group of "old men" all claim they shot the white man so that no one man can be proven guilty. The incident is an opportunity for the old men to finally stand up against the white establishment that has oppressed them for their entire lives. A unique aspect of this book is that each chapter is narrated by a different character so the reader gains many perspectives as the plot develops.The book was required reading for my high schooler, which is what lead me to read this book. It is an excellent book, and I highly recommend it. The book leads to some excellent discussions on race relations, changes with new generations, and doing what is right regardless of the personal cost. My son had to write a paper comparing one of the minor characters, Russell, to Oskar Schindler.If you enjoyed To Kill a Mockingbird, you are likely to enjoy this book as well.

I think this is one of the best books I have read in years. It is an age old problem that I used to think was behind us, but lately I realize nothing has changed. This book is well written and as true today as the period of history it is supposed to represent.
