I really liked this book. Frankly, I had expected less from it -- simply because there are so many books and other media out there right now on the Pacific Coast quake danger; and a lot of what has been written is either overly weighty with technical detail or over-dramatized to grab the reader with scary scenarios. So like I say, I expected less -- and I was surprised with what I got. Doughton's book is gripping for sure, but that comes organically from her own fascination with the subject. You are pulled along not by fear but by her enthusiasm, her engagement. Yes, the scenarios are scary, but as she also explains in her balanced way, no one really knows quite how to calculate the odds. Even numbers we're given (~7-37% in the next 50 years, depending on what and where you're talking about) are being constantly challenged by new data, new findings about what's underneath us and how far it stretches and when it last shook. One of Doughton's points in the book is that while scientists are doing their best to refine their prediction models, that effort is far behind what they are discovering about the faults themselves and the geophysics of the crust in the Pacific Northwest. And what they are discovering is pretty astonishing, and fascinating to read about.I found Doughton's writing really compelling, and she explained things better than anyone else I've read on this subject. That might be just me and how I connect to her style of writing, but while I normally struggle to get some of the more technical parts of quake geoscience, Doughton's accessible writing style and many creative analogies really worked for me. I wish she'd taught that geology course I took in college! I highly recommend this book.

By far the best book out there on this topic. Nick Zentner recommended this book in his lecture on Great Earthquakes of the Pacific Northwest and I put off buying it because I had simply gotten worn out by books on earthquakes or geology that literally bore you to death with filler material. Most authors/lecturers put tons of filler material in their works, material that has little to nothing to do with the topic. What a breath of fresh air this book was. I originally bought the Kindle version but went back and ordered it in hardback because I wanted something I would mark up with underlining and have the ability to write notes in the margin.Ms Doughton covers many topics in depth that most barely cover IF at all. I found the chapter on the Seattle Fault especially fascinating. The book never gets boring or drawn out. I just wish it was also available on Audible....hint, hint.

Sandi Doughton is like the Paul Revere of the NW warning us about a very real and present danger. In Full Rip 9.0 we are being given data that allows us to make informed decisions. This book is a must-read for every household in the NW.Although I have science degrees coming out of my ears, I am usually bored silly reading non-fiction. Sandi Doughton's book is very well written, easily readable, and scientifically sound. I can't put it down.I've followed earthquake activity for the last decade and am on the USGS site daily. We've been privileged to have the ears of emergency management professionals that started talking about this subject back in '95. Still, I always believed I knew and understood just enough to be dangerous. Because of Full Rip 9.0, I feel like a person who is legally blind that has been given a pair of glasses that allows them to see clearly. I get it!Back in '95, we asked the professionals we talked with why the information they were telling us wasn't public knowledge. Among other reasons, they said that they didn't want the public to panic but that when we begin to hear about it spoken openly in the media, we'll know that the officials are beginning to sweat. This week, the news said, "This isn't and "if" it's a "when"." Still, people are not listening and have lulled themselves into a false sense of security. The Oregon Seismic Safety Policy Advisory Commission wrote a long report that was recently reported upon in our news. The bottom line was, "Oregonians as individuals are underprepared." Even with our limited knowledge, for the last seven years, we have worked diligently to get our church and friends to have 72 hour packs for their cars (ours are 2 week'ers), and at least a two month supply of food and water at home. Though a few have listened, most have not done so.News articles said, "In Portland and the Willamette Valley, water and sewer would be out for a month to a year and electricity a month to three months. Most businesses would shutter after two weeks to a month because of the outage. On the coast, those utilities could be out for a year or several years, the study found."Several years.Think of that. Much of the NW would be catapulted back to the early 1800's! This is a very real threat. I will absolutely be spreading the word about this work.

Although I do not live in the northwest, I am very interested in earthquake science and, especially recently, in the Cascadia fault and the potential disaster. I live in California so am somewhat blasé about earthquakes (I've been through a few) but this fault is scary and this book does a very good job of scaring the hell out of me.The author shows her journalism training by making a complicated and highly technical subject very readable. I've read many science books where whole sections leave me saying what the devil do you mean?? But that is not the case here. The science was explained in laymen's terms and the narrative moved like a good novel.I highly recommend this book if you live in Washington or Oregon, if you are interested in earthquakes or if you just want a good non-fiction read..
