Happy that I picked up this guide for my trip. It has just enough detail and recommendations for any type of traveler. I previously picked up the Ulitmate Guide, which is likewise good, but it a bit more oriented to the adventure type of traveler. It is useful but was not what I was looking for ultimately.On the other hand, the Foder guide was just what I needed -- it has a diverse variety of activities, and the 8-day itinerary is spot-on for what I really wanted. I certainly will use the Ultimate Guide -- especially for its local & cultural insights -- but it's the Fodor Guide that I will be taking with me.
Generally I like Fodor's guide books but was disappointed in this one. Yes, it has beautiful color photos. But guess what?? There are NO CAPTIONS on some of the photos so you don't know where on Kauai they were taken (e.g. page 1, which I think might be a double page spread of Queen's Bath. Also I found that the book is heavy on general items that could be in any guide book for Hawaii (a page on how to snorkel, history of Hawaii, etc) and light on "hidden gems" and comprehensive listings. The index is also very light - and I found it useless when trying to quickly find something. Friends said a book called Kauai Revealed (currently #1 under Hawaii guide books) is much better so I'd check that out next time. Also one called "Hidden Kauai"....Here are a few of our own tips:- Drive to Waimea Canyon in the morning before the clouds roll in. Amazing views. Drive ALL THE WAY to the end of the road and then work your way back. Many see the first few overlooks and turn around. The end of the road has amazing views of the Napali Coast.- Get to go food at Ishihara Market in Waimea at the back deli counter (amazing ahi poke, kim chee, banana nut bread) and take it to Salt Pond Park and eat on a picnic table, amazing view, amazing food, cheap. For a more upscale experience go to one of the Dolphin Fish take out bars in Poipu or Hanalei.- Our favorite restaurant was Keoki's Paradise in Poipu. It's sort of like eating in Disneyland's Tiki Room, but great food, great service, and fair prices. Also sushi rolls in the bar at Red Salt, hamburgers by the pool same place, nice expensive dinner at the St. Regis at the Makana Grill (ask for outside table, don't overdress, we did).- Best supermarket is the one Safeway on the island (we went to Big Save and were pretty appalled at the poor quality of the prouce). There is a nearby Foodland that also looks nice.- Allow plenty of time at the airport on the way back. We had ZERO line but later we saw terrible lines after a flight cancelled. They aren't staffed to handle crowds when things go wrong.I don't think any of these tips were in the guide book, and ultimately most guide books are just a starting place. The best ones though you find yourself looking at over and over in the car.... this one, we read once and then left it in our condo.Enjoy and aloha!
This another of our favorite guides to use when on vacation. Truthful, helpful and full of interesting information. Completely easy to use and understand. We enjoy being informed of the most wonderful things to do and see whenever we go on vacation and this book helped a great deal. We really liked how informative and truthful it was written. We will use this again and you should give it a try.
I studied this book in preparation for a presentation I made to an organization I belong to, proposing a conference on Kauai. It worked for that purpose, and having used other Fodor's guides for other trips (Santa Fe, for example), I anticipate that the detailed maps, reviews and descriptions will come in handy when I go to Kauai..
We took this book on our Kauai Vacation and found the information accurate and extremely helpful. We would recommend it to anyone planing a trip to Kauai. The restaurants recommended were truly 5 star, as well as the beaches and directions.
What fun to review the island and details that give us reason to visit places we had not considered.Wonderful adventuring in different places and peaceful retreats. We had so much fun that we ventured off on our own and enjoyed many places we would not have gone to were it not for the enticement of the books overview of the area.Recommend this as an added source of information on Kaua'i before you go. Fodor's guide to Kauai is excellent - highlights what to see and do on the island and gives spot-on recommendations for restaurants, hotels, tours, and shopping. I always try to have a guide like this with us when we travel.
Great book. Full map of the island, place to write notes in the back, very informative. I bought it for my second trip to island and though fairly well educated about it already, learned new things and found new places to see via Fodor's Kauai. Good purchase.
