I realize this book was published in 1998, and I thought it might be a bit dated, but bought it to read with my son because it seemed thorough and included a section on STDs. Overall, it's a well written book with lots of good, accurate, morally neutral information. However, Chapter 10, entitled "If I'd Known Then What I Know Now!" contains quotes from men such as the following: "Don: I wish I'd known I could have been a lot more aggressive with girls - but I don't want any of my daughter's friends to hear that!" and "Larry: If I could live my life over, I'd like to have the ability to really figure females out. I've learned that what they say isn't always what they mean." Aaaahhh!! No, no, no! This is a book about sex!! It is not OK to be more aggressive with girls! NO MEANS NO!! There needs to be a revised edition with a section on consent!!! While it may be true that people (and not only females!) don't always say what they mean, NO MEANS NO, and furthermore, failure to say NO does not imply consent!!

This book is really not for younger adolescents. My son is 12 and after I previewed this book, I didn't feel he was ready for it. I did photocopy the first three chapters. Most of it seemed more appropriate for high schoolers. There was one very odd situation mentioned, where a boy asks if masterbating with his male cousin means he is gay? The book then goes on to say it is normal for boys to do this together. I strongly disagree and will share photos from the book.

This book is age appropriate for a high schooler! It talks very little about basic facts regarding physical changes, yet talks extensively about sex. This will not help your child understand why they are growing hair or other physical changes. It will just encourage them(as if they would ever need it!!!) to experiment with sex.I'm seriously disappointed and fairly disturbed amthat this is geared toward such a young age.

This book is awesome!!! My son is getting ready to go to middle school and with that said I felt that I needed to get ahead of what all of his school mates may share and expose him to. This book covers EVERYTHING. Including explaining what the changes that they may be noticing in girls and why. Which at first I was a little taken aback, but I would never want my son to embarass a girl who may have had an accident. So, with that said . . . I have recommened this book to any and all of my friends and fellow Moms who have a sone that is also on his way to Middle School. I would also like to add that the way the book is written is very relatable for a tween. I love that author worked with 2 Middle School aged boys and of course doctor(s) to write the book. It's not a clinical/encyclopedia delivery of information. I highly recommend this book!

Fantastic perspective for boys aged 11-13. It helps take the uncomfortableness out of the discussion while exploring most everything a boy would need to know correctly, instead of from the locker room. Some parts were a little more detailed than most 11 year olds need but we used that as a great topic starting point. I would strongly advice the parent read it before the child so you can decide what you want them to know and so you can openly discuss the topics. It's pretty in-depth and covers everything from hair growth to girl's menstruation to sexuality and life style choices as well as what counts as "sex." My sons found it very helpful and I enjoyed that the conversations afterward were more open.

A fun and funny way to "tell" your son some of the things you just can't say to him. I did look through the book first and write in a few things that my husband and I believe and want him to know. We try to always be open to questions but sometimes when the kids want to bring up gross stuff in the middle of dinner it's nice to just say, "You can look at your book later dear."

This is a good resource for boys entering puberty. My son just turned 11, and whether I'm ready for this or not, his body is starting to change. I of course am happy and willing to answer any questions he has, but this book gives him a way to find things out without needing to speak directly to me about embarrassing issues. I bought it for him along with another less specific book (the body book for boys by rebecca paley) and just put them on his bed. When he found out about it, he spent the next hour reading by himself. I asked later which book he liked better and this was the winner by far. It simply has the information he wants in a way he can easily understand. I also want to add that the mentions of bondage or S&M are total misrepresentations of what is in this book. There is an illustration of a boy on a rack (the torture device) being stretched, and a person in an executioner's type hood beside him, and the boy is saying "more! more!" Okay, if you are flipping through this book, you might see this drawing and imagine that it's demonstration some bizarre sex act. However, if you actually READ the page, it's a kid who is shorter than his friends and wants to grow! Jeez people, read before you judge. It's a good, clear book. It tells information without judgement in a clear and direct way. It does go into detail... which is what the kids want to know. Knowledge is power.

Hildegard of Bingen was a 12th century Benedictine mystic, visionary, writer, composer and a lot more. She wrote beautifully about the visions God gave her. Her writing is in the same ballpark as that of Julian of Norwich, Richard Rolle and the author of The Cloud of Unknowing. I realise Mediaeval mystics may not be to everyone's taste but St Hildegard is worth reading if only for the beauty of her writing.

This book contains excerpts of Hildegard of Bingen's various writings including her letters to important people of her time. It gave me a picture of her mystical, musical life which included running a monastery and her visions which prompted her to write about natural medicine and herbs. I enjoyed the fact that the book was a sampler of all these arts which made me want to read her writings and listen to her music.

Gorgeous writings by an amazing woman. If you're interested in the lives of saints, mysticism, or women in medieval Europe, this book is excellent.

Very Good for research papers.

I knew nothing of St. Hildegard and felt that an over all view would serve as a catalyst for further reading. This book is a wonderful introduction to both her mysticism and her incredible dedication to her calling. She is truly a "sainte" for all ages!

Bought it for my husband. He loves it. It has all kinds of breads to make in our bread machine.

Was great when I was a beginner baking. enjoyed using it for a long time.

I look through this book quite often for my next bread adventure. So far I've been happy with the recipes with the exception of the salt levels. Half the amount recommended works for me. Other bread machine cookbooks call for the same amount of salt as this book, so It could just be my personal taste. The book is good, with beautiful photos and easy to follow recipes. I recommend it highly.

I live in two locations. I had a copy of this book at one location, and I like it so much that I decided to purchase a second copy. My family's favorite recipe so far is the Sticky Buns. Every recipe I have tried has been delicious.

The book had some good recipes, but all for 1 and 1 and 1/2 1b loaves. My machine is for 2, 21/2, or 3 lb loaves, so have to calculate out the recipes if I use them which is a pain. I wish I knew that before I purchesed it. Anyway, have gotten some good ideas from the book

makes my breadmachine a greater product plus tasty aswell.

I love this book and have baked my way though it. The Czechoslovak Christmas Bread has become a tradition in our family at Christmas - what a treat!

This is the first Miss Marple book, and I think it must be the best Miss Marple I've read. I like that in this book we get an unusually large dose of Miss Marple. She's a full and important character, unlike some later books in which she is only tangential.This book has Miss Marple working on her home turf of St. Mary Mead. Colonel Protheroe, a man no one liked, is found murdered in the vicarage. The narrator of the story is the vicar, and he is endowed with a slightly sarcastic sense of humor. In ambiance and complexity this is one of Christie's best.

It's hard to know where to begin...I've read several Hercule Poirot mysteries but this is my first Miss Marple book. I've watched a few of her movies but cant say I remember much about them. There is quite a cast of characters, which also means there were plenty of suspects. There were lots of subtle clues that kept making me change my mind, again and again, as to who the killer was. There were also a few side mysteries, unrelated to the murder, but their clues and people were getting mixed in with the confusion of the murder case.The story is told from the perspective of the town Vicar, at whose home the murder took place. Elderly spinster Jane Marple lives next door to the vicarage. At first, Miss Marple is not around very much but as the case progresses, she pops up more and more. She really is mostly a background character, which surprised me. I'm interested to read more books to see if that's how they all are.Anyway, this was a great mystery and I can't wait to read more Marple!

Agatha Christie was already an accomplished author when she composed this, the first Miss Marple mystery. It is the story of a homicide at a vicarage in a small English village. It is clever and pleasant. Needless to say, there is no inappropriate language. I would call the style, post Victorian and civilized. There is a lot of wry humor. Personally, I really like Victorian and post Victorian literature. It does not appeal to all modern readers.I read this book on Kindle while simultaneously listening to the work on audiobook. The narrator was Richard E. Grant. Mr. Grant was excellent. This story by Agatha Christie seems to depend more on clever twists and withheld bits of information. Early on I came up with a hypothesis about the homicide itself, but not the identity of the killer, and I was completely wrong, even on how the homicide occurred. There is a lack of scientific description of sounds which made it impossible for me to examine my own hypothesis.I had no idea who actually did it, not even a "prime suspect". There are many personalities involved in the story. I had trouble keeping track of everyone and probably need to read the story again if I really want to fully understand it. There are also side stories that constantly throws one off the scent. I believe these are referred to as "red herrings". Agatha Christie made liberal use of red herrings in this novel. Between all the different personalities and all of the red herrings, when the inevitable solution finally occurred, I was neither surprised or not surprised.I read a story awhile back with my book club and a lady there said she felt like she needed a "scorecard" to keep up with all the characters in that book. I sort of felt that way in this story. I may reread it, but not right now...In summary, I really like this novel and plan on reading more Agatha Christie novels. Thank You.

Miss Marple, as always, quite politely whilst tending her garden and enjoying high tea, runs circles mentally around all the detectives trying to solve the murder. She enjoys her hobby of studying human behaviors.Agatha Christie will always be one of the finest mystery novels that we have the pleasure of reading. I especially like her books for their lack of profanity, sexual exploits, and gruesome scenes. Mrs. Christie reminds us that you don't have to resort to any of those things to have a book that keeps you up all night!!!I was in middle/junior high school when I first read all of her novels and fell in love with her style of writing. Now almost 30 years later, a grown lady, she is still one of my top 5 favorite authors-- and an author that I would not hesitate giving to a 12-13 year old child if they enjoyed mysteries. Unfortunately, so many of the current fiction right now I am unable to say the same about because of the profanity or inappropriate sexually explicit scenes or gruesome violence.I cannot highly recommend any Agatha Christie novel highly enough!!!

As other reviewers have already expressed, it is as informative as a text book, yet as readable as a novel. Lot's of good info covering almost everything from A to Z. I generally agree with the previous positive comments, so I will not repeat them. The book does have two glaring omissions. 1. It never addresses the differences between a Mutual Insurance company and other Shareholder companies. I thought the author would have pointed out the advantages and benefits of a mutual company. He does have the definition of a mutual company in the Glossary of Terms at the end of the book, but he should have devoted at least a few paragraphs to this important distinction. Kind of like writting a book on banking but not exxplaining the differences between a bank and a credit union. 2. In the preface he states that Life Insurance is not an investment. He never explains this in the book. There is a lot of books and chatter about self banking using life insurance that he should have addressed. The author states that it is a financial vehicle that can be used to pay for education and many other things. That sounds like an investment to me. He should have shown the difference between an investment and life insurance.It easily deserves fives stars, if not for the two mentioned omissions.Thanks,Joe

Tony Steurs book is one of the most comprehensive and informative books on Life insurance on the market today. Tony is genuinley interested in the welfare of consumers money and dispels the myths on life insurance. I enjoyed reading the book It provided plenty of samples of policy illustrations and explained how to evaluate an insurance companies financial stability and their ability to pay their death claims. I am a Life Insurance agent, so I found it very useful in trying to understand the different types of policies and which ones to avoid and which ones that would be better suited for the consumer. Tony is a very intelligent man who knows how policies work and how to explain it to consumers and companies. I would give "Questions and ansers: Life Insurance" 2 thumbs up and five stars. If you are a consumer getting ready to purchase a Life Insurance policy or have apolicy thats up for renewal I would deffinitley reccomend giving this book a read.

I am a single woman almost 50 years old. I know I should know a lot more about life insurance but I don't. This book is a great reference tool. Now I know enough to ask intelligent questions when I shop around for life insurance policies.

For the beginning insurance agent, this is a very good book. Insurance products are very complex and sometimes difficult to explain, this book helps and could even be used to help answer prospective clients questions while presenting. I am glad I own this book.

Where to begin? This is "Gödel, Escher, Bach" for actual math people. You might call it instructions for a precise mysticism, though that barely touches what it really gets into.

I won't comment on the content of the book, but I would like to comment on the Kindle edition that I bought. Some figures are hard to read, and there are several typographical errors, such as mathematical symbols missing (for example the expression (s=t & t=r) -> s=r on page 272, is just (s=t & t=r) s=r in the Kindle edition. One place, a 1 is replaced by ], and one place the lemniscate - quite an important symbol in a book on inifinity - is replaced to separate circles (the ones used for degrees). These were even split across lines. Some = have been converted to :. It seems as the kindle edition is made from scanning and OCRing the print edition, without proofreading. The errors are not so numerous or hard to spot that it made the book significantly harder to read, but they are an annoyance. I would recommend the print edition.With technical books containing many formulas and figures, the kindle preview should always contain some sections with such elements.

The book is written for a reader who is philosophically curious and patient in reading. After introducting the various context ( spatial, temporal , physical) where one encounter the issue of infinity, the author explain clearly the debate of potential vs actual infinity. Here author points out about the Greek philosophical tendencies. Chapter two discusses the revolution brought by Cantor's works. He explains the concept using a lot of symbols, diagrams and illustrations. The reader is made to understand the notion of transfinite number. The chapter ends with an extract from his novel White Light which deals with the idea of the chapter. Next chapter discusses the kind of paradoxes one encounter in thinking the theme of infinity within modern mathematical logical framework. Chapter four discusses the implications of Godel's theorems in question of Robot consciousness. He gives details about his personal interactions with Godel. He mentiones about his dream about Godel the day before Godel's death. This is most humanistic chapter. Last chapter discusses the abstract philosophical reflections. There are two well written excursion chapters : one on Cantor's set theory and one on Godel's Incompleteness theorems. Every chapter has well thought puzzles and paradoxes section.

Rucker had finished writing this by June 19, 1981, as his preface says. Yet, he has the naivete (or perhaps the gall) to say something inane like "Set theory is, indeed, the science of the Mindscape. A set is the form of a possible thought." on p. 41. Since Zadeh published his landmark "Fuzzy Sets" paper in 1965, and Black and others had written similar ideas years earlier, along with multivalued logicians like Lukasiewicz developing possibly infinite-valued logics as far back as the 1920s, one would think that Rucker would be informed or wise enough than such statements. It appears otherwise. I find it curious that Rucker also knew Godel who did work in multivalued logics, but basically Rucker doesn't acknolwedge multivalued logics as even possible forms of thought. As for the comments about Mr. Rucker qualifying as an intellectual descendent of Hegel, they simply don't hold water. Rucker denies the property of contradiction (it is not the case that A and not A hold). Hegel accepted it and sought some other way to do logic than Aristotle's logic.

I was first introduced to this book by a mathematical philosopher friend in 2001. Immediately I was drawn into the book, because it dealt with many subjects I'd been thinking, such as how there are more real numbers than natural numbers, how infinity comes in different sizes, and how the mere existence of infinity is to be questioned. Soon I got lost in all the numbers and had to put the book down a few times until the summer of 2006.Rucker's writing was more like personal notes he wrote for himself than a well-constructed thesis on the subject. And here are some of my own personal notes about this book.Chapter one reviews the history of infinity, and introduces the concept of mindscape. Years ago I was excited about the idea of mindscape, but after I had the fortune to see the Reality as a whole, I found this idea rather intuitive and basic. I was happy to see the mention of the Absolute as part of the discussion of Infinity.Chapter two is about all the numbers. Again soon I became confused with the names of different infinities. Unless one can tightly grab onto the endless symbols Rucker introduced incessantly throughout the chapter (and the book) one would have a difficult time follow the text. Also his figures are ill-labeled. I don't think I am missing much by skipping some of the paragraphs. I also skipped the two excursions because they are even more technical.Chapter three is titled "The Unnameable", and Rucker discussed the Berry Paradox and discussed the reality of Truth, among other subjects. It's interesting to see how systematically and detailed he talks about the logic of "This sentence is false", and even distinguishes it from "This sentence is not true". I skipped the more technical section of Richard's Paradox, assuming it is along the similar line of the truth discussion. I was glad to find out that Rucker is also a Borges's fan (I only wish I could write reviews of books and movies as clearly and originally as Borges). From Borges's story about the Library of Babel--the library of all possible books, Rucker introduced a clever tool--to code each book into a natural number. Furthermore, the whole universe can be coded into a natural number, and thus we can think about the infinity nature of the universe the way we think about numbers.Chapter four is about robots and souls, but the more interesting part is the three conversations Rucker had with Godel. I was happy to know that Godel is a mystic, partly because I am becoming more and more identified with the label mystic.... Godel has found. Rucker is still seeking.Chapter five is on the One and the Many, the most philosophical chapter of the book. Rucker probably does not have the One figured out, but it's interesting to see how he compares the One and the Many in a rational way.Rudy Rucker wrote this book in 1982. Perhaps he has reached another stage in his search. Despite of many inadequacies I found in this book, it nonetheless has showed me fascinating new ways of thinking about the universe. For this I am grateful. I would rate this book 4 out of 5 stars.p.s. I feel I am much slower than 5 years ago. I don't seem to be able to comprehend complex systems as effortlessly as I used to--perhaps a sign that my brain power is declining?

Great book. The short chapter format was perfect. Changed my views a bit as well. Looking forward to what Rory writes next.

Rory's book captures the feeling that many disaffected and disenfranchised veterans experience, having been a pawn of American imperialism. Both evocative and cathartic, his work never ceases to be captivating. I have passed this book off to four people now; all of them have taken something meaninful from it and loved Rory's writing.

This book was so inspiring. Rory Fanning is a great man to honor another great man this way. Pat Tillman was killed for this country and Rory wanted to properly say goodbye to his friend, fellow soldier and true human ally in the fight for 'liberty and justice for all'. Rory walked on two feet, and went step by step across America to meet and greet the people of the nation Pat died for. The people he met make you proud to be an American.May his noble journey and Pat's memory continue to inspire him and others to live with passion, purpose and honesty, in harmony with nature and with compassion for each other. If we had more men like Pat and Rory in positions of authority America would be the powerfully peaceful nation so many of us know it could be.We civilians are the only ones who can protect the spirits and bodies of our brave service men and women from the corruption of the war mongers in the world who spill their blood needlessly for financial gain. We must walk with men like Rory. We must honor men like Pat. This book reminds us that our soldiers lives are worth fighting for.

I am so appreciative of the moral courage that Rory displayed and further appreciative that he is willing to share that experience with we the reader. My time was of an earlier time than Rory as I am a Viet Nam vet. I was not a Ranger, but was in a Special Forces Group, so can relate to what it is like being in what most consider to be an elite unit. As Chris Hedges has observed from his many years as a war correspondent, physical courage is easy to find in war, but moral courage is rare. That is what I found in war also, hence my great admiration of Rory.

Amazing story - read it in one sitting.

This book was about a cross country walk, but also a personal quest. He had a connection and a drive to accomplish a goal. It is done in a very humble way, just like like how most of us would cross the country. Living on a meager source of income. Kept me interested.

Good story- Not many would have the courage to do what he did. Would have been a fuller picture if he included more of what caused the change of mind.
