I did not have really high expectations, after all, how exciting can a book on a dollar store be. However, once I got past the first fifteen pages, it was riveting, and due to the high detail nature of the stories, I felt like I was there, from the beginning of Dollar Tree. Yeah, I was bored with about the first 15 pages, wondering if this was going to get better, but once we were past Brocks childhood years, and into the meat and potatoes, it did not disappoint me. I even read it trying to put myself to sleep-however instead, it kept me reading, because I wanted to see what happened next...

I'm the president and COO of a small upcoming company and often find myself looking for first hand accounts that dive deeper than the latest corporate executive jargon and Tony Robbins like self-help approach. I'm happy to say that I found what I was looking for in One Buck at a Time, by Macon Brock. Make no mistake, Mr. Brock's does not bring action and adventure like Richard Branson, dole out self-aggrandizing prophecy like Elon Musk, or portray the edgy brilliant life of someone like Steve Jobs. His steady, honest and personable approach portrays the life of a man and a company that learned a lot along the way, with an emphasis on the corporate culture and mission that would serve as the backbone for one of the most successful retail brands in the world. Mr. Brock is not ashamed to call out a lucky break or give credit where it is due and never once takes credit for the extraordinary talent and intelligence that he most certainly possessed. Instead, he paints the picture of a family man making the most out of an opportunity and not afraid to believe in his ability to succeed or aspire to great things. Macon Brock rises from the page a confident, approachable and persistent man destined to be successful - a true American hero that one can't help but root for. I highly recommend this book.

The first sales call I ever made was to Macon Brock back when the initial conversion was made to K&K Toys. It was refreshing to read about his family and the Perry family who, because the Brock's and Perry's were so friendly and outgoing, I was able to establish a lasting relationship with all of them. The relationship still exists today, but a little more distant since I know live in Nashville.The book is very descriptive and is historically correct in relation to the toy industry and retail industry from the 70's until now. I would think that anyone that is interested in the toy industry and retail industry or even how to ultimately build an empire with hard work and devotion, this would be worthwhile reading.

Wow what a great book! It was hard to put it down. Amazing what Dollar Tree went through in the early years to get where they are now.

I grew up in Norfolk knew Macon in Joan Brock. I was the principal of the high school both of them attended.It was very interesting to see in detail what Ben Franklin/K&K Toys/Dollar Tree has done over the last 60+ years. The Brock’s are a perfect example of what happens to people when they works 24/7. As one reads in the book both we’re dedicated in putting a quality product like they accomplished in all their business endeavors.MUST read for all !

Having grown up down the street from the Perry's, I found this story fascinating. We all grew up hanging out at Ward's Corner and in Ben Franklin. Doug was like my brother and Joanie was the pretty, sweet girl I looked up to, and still do. Mr. Perry drove me to school and Mrs. Perry taught me to sew. I used to baby sit Kathryn Brock during those years when Macon was in Viet Nam.Everyone who grew up with the Perry's is so proud of the family's success and continued humility and generosity. I ran into Macon in my local Dollar Tree "buying batteries", he said. Yeah, right. He was scoping the place out.Thank you, Macon Brock, for writing this book because it needed to happen so the story won't be forgotten.

Excellent account of the formation of an iconic American business , with lots of details about the people who were there from day one .Many details about the family members who provided the basis from which it sprang are included !

This was a really great book about the start of one of the most profitable companies on Wall Street. It's amazing how Dollar Tree became the giant it is today. The book also has really helpful life lessons!

Actually 3.5 stars. I was on FileMaker Pro 7 Developer from 2005 to 2012; I finally upgraded to FileMaker Pro 11 Advanced, and so it was time to buy a good reference. I had been relying on the Special Edition Using FileMaker 7 by Lane, Bowers, Love, and Moyer--an excellent 5 star book--but they didn't update it for version 11, so I went with The Missing Manual. Honestly, it just isn't as good, but it's still worth buying and studying. You'll learn something new on every page; there have been far more changes in version 11 than I had previously imagined, and you will not get by on your version 7 skill set. Unfortunately there is no calculation function reference and no script step reference. A rather small subset of the functions and steps are discussed in the book. The section on "Sharing Your Database" does not discuss Windows Terminal Server. There is a list of error codes, but no recommendations as what to do. The index is fine. The screen shots are on the small side. You can probably read 20-30 pages a day and go through the book and examples in about one month. If you get stuck you can always go to fmforums.com for help by the FileMaker community.

Filemaker Pro 11 (both the book and the software) are easy to learn and use. As a beginner database designer (and I was thrown into database design via the sink or swim method), this book is as painless as it gets. I only regret I cannot read, type and think faster. It's fun!This is a highly formatted book and the formatting makes it easy to use, understand and to reuse as a reference. Stripping away the formatting for the Kindle was a desecration of all the work the editors and authors put into the book. Buy this book on paper (5 star book!). The only reason to buy the Kindle version is if you need to carry it around and the paper copy is too heavy.By the way, I borrowed the paper copy from my library. I will buy it when they stop renewing my loan.

IF you have the PDF Filemaker Pro User Guide in one hand and this in the other, you will probably be able to accomplish what you want to do. After using both simultanously, I can't tell which does what, but I know that I needed both to get anything done. I should say that I'm coming from a history of intense digging into Filemaker, so I may have a warped idea of what helps accomplish what. Constructing relational databases is not in my job description; I just got interested. This book and the PDF manuals that came with the app are sufficient.

I could do without the attempts to joke. The book overall is ok, not sure if I would purchase again. What I don't understand is why it seems to be impossible to find a TRULY excellent add on source that provides the types of examples you think you would get from a "missing manual"...this goes back to some basic stuff that I wasn't expecting to have to flip through.

I recently switched from Filemaker 8.5 to 11. A lot has happened to Fiemaker since 8.5 and so I bought this book to help me catch up on all the features of FM 11.It is very thorough, very complete and very well written. The authors actually thought ahead as they wrote the book. They knew what might be confusing and were sure to include explanations and samples where needed to eliminate any confusion.Excellent book. I would recommend it to anyone using Filemaker 11 - beginner to pro.

Like most "complete" manuals it is dense with detail in its nearly 900 pages. But that's the price I have to pay if I want to fully understand and MASTER the program. Would have been willing to pay more if it included one or more tutorials and additional templates & any other programs/scripts/help, etc., to help get me up to speed more rapidly. Might lose a star or two if I find any errors, misdirections or incomplete instructions. (just starting on reading & testing manual).

This was a Kindle book. It contents are great! The Kindle implementation is very poor. The index functionality is poor. I have gone back to an earlier paper version to find the approximate location of what I am looking for. The delivery method has such potential, but this implementation missed the mark. I expected more form the Missing Manual Series.

Judging only from the sample available on Amazon, I'd say that Ms. Appleton was a pretty precocious writer when she was 24 years old. Earnest. Heartfelt. Vastly self-involved. She handles the nuts and bolts of writing pretty well. She paid attention in school. Her product is not unreadable, just, I'm afraid, dull and naïve. And it's not her fault, but she suffers by comparison, as does any expat woman who writes a memoir of Thailand, with "Mai Pen Rai Means Nevermind." It would be almost, I think, impossible to write a better memoir. But I give Ms. Appleton points for effort.

This book cleverly is set up as a travel account with descriptive imagery. I enjoyed the author’s question, of What If. What if life doesn’t always go as one may hope or imagine, but possibilities are many when confronted with facing a new way, or road to be taken. Such growth, learning, and beauty come alive!

About the Author

ALEX ROSS studied illustration at the American Academy of Art in Chicago, then honed his craft as a storyboard artist before entering the comics field. His miniseries Marvels (Marvel Comics, 1993) opened a wider acceptance for painted comics. He moved on to produce the equally successful Kingdom Come (DC Comics, 1996). His extensive work for DC/Vertigo includes Absolute Justice League, Uncle Sam, Astro City, Justice, and Justice Society of America. Ross has continued producing work for Marvel Comics, including the Earth X trilogy, Spider-Man, and the Avengers. His work outside of comics includes magazine and album covers, as well as the poster for the 2002 Academy Awards®. Ross is currently creating a variety of art prints, including works of the Beatles, Universal Monsters, and Disney characters, among others.  CHIP KIDD is the three-time Eisner Award-winning author, art director, and designer of Batman Collected, Batman: Animated (co-author), Peanuts: The Art of Charles M. Schulz, Mythology: The DC Comics Art of Alex Ross, Bat-Manga!: The Secret History of Batman in Japan, and the graphic novel Batman: Death by Design. Back in 2005, there was a book on Alex Ross's DC work called "Mythology." It discussed Alex Ross's early work (as a kid) and his influences. It showed how his work evolved and then showcased his work from "Kingdom Come" in oversize pages on high quality paper. Other illustrations and covers that he composed over the years were also featured.Fast forward to 2018 and the release of "Marvelocity" yesterday. I was thrilled to get it in the mail and have largely devoured it. And yet it is the kind of book that I will go back to again and again. It is an oversize book, which allows the artwork to come out evenly lovelier than in the original comics. Mr. Ross's illustrations from "Marvels" is in here, but we also get a chance to see his other covers, the Earth X work, and his amazing reproductions of classic Marvel scenes (he has redone most of the classic first appearances of #1 issues with similar blocking but in his own style).There are numerous sketches and several comments from other comic book writers and artists.Excelsior!

For as long as I can remember, I've always been a fan of the artwork of Alex Ross. His photo-realistic paintings of superheroes are utterly breathtaking to look at, and have been a huge inspiration to me, from his creative angles, to the raw emotion he can convey in every brushstroke that makes these characters leap off the page and appear as though he's captured them in real life.Because of this, "Mythology: The DC Comics Art of Alex Ross" has been one of my favorite books for years, as it's the best collection of a great many of his artwork he did for DC, while also including many of his childhood drawings; showing how talented he was with a pencil at such a young age. But knowing full well that he's done art for plenty of other major comic companies, I always thought to myself, "They should put out a book that has all his Marvel artwork." Thankfully, it seems many others thought the same, because at long last, my wish was granted."Marvelocity" isn't coy about what it is. It's the Marvel parallel to "Mythology", and if you have said book, then you'll be familiar with the presentation. Written and put together by the same team, it begins with documenting Ross' early childhood, comparing his artwork as a kid to what he can do now; his inspirations, and then a mega gallery of his paintings with his commentary sprinkled throughout, including never-before-seen pencil sketches and concept art, then ending with a short comic story exclusive to the book.But calling "Marvelocity" a carbon copy of "Mythology" is too harsh a word. While the format is virtually the same, the commentary and insight into his thoughts on superheroes, and his process of creating his art is, alone, worth the price of admission. And his behind-the-scenes concept art of many projects he's worked on, from the opening titles of 'Spider-Man 2', to his pitches for the X-Men's costumes for the live action movies (which look awesome and should've been used, in my opinion) are interesting. And then, of course, there's the paintings themselves, which are a joy to look at. I could stare at each image for over an hour, and every time I revisit a painting, I find some new detail I missed the first time. And as a bonus, many of the artworks are so big, the pages have to unfold into mini-posters just to show it all.However, even a mega-fan like me has to admit the book isn't entirely perfect. I have only two nitpicks. One: I hope you like Spider-Man, because a large chunk of the book is devoted to him. I can sort of understand this, since much of Ross' recent work has been his cover art for the many Spider-Man titles releasing currently (and most of the covers are included in here). And I like Spidey as much as the next person....but still, I think the book went just a little on Spidey overload. And two: the formatting on some of the images could be a tad better. It's charming to see Ross' childhood art....but I don't think we needed full page splashes of his early scribblings. Because let's be honest here...we're primarily here to see his beautiful paintings. The 'kid art' could've been minimized to make the 'adult art' bigger. Which, on a similar note, I think just an extra few pages could've been added so that his cover artwork could be blown up to a bigger size. There's sections where they fit over 15 comic covers on a single page, making each image a thumbnail size, to the point I had to whip out a magnifying glass just to pick out all the details.But despite those two little problems, this is still a gorgeous book that any fan of Alex Ross, or any fan of comic book art in general, NEEDS to have in their collection.

Alex Ross takes the comic / cartoonish characters we all grew up loving in Marvel comic books and turns them into real life, realistic looking characters. Ever wonder what Captain America, Spider-Man, The Incredible Hulk, or The Fantastic Four would look like if you ran into them out in the real world? This book answers that question.Not only is the art amazing and one of a kind, but the back story is so very interesting. I can’t suggest this book highly enough!

If you liked Alex Ross' Mythology for DC, you should enjoy his collected depictions of the Marvel Universe. I even had the pleasure of meeting him in 1993 when "Marvels" was being released. The cover artwork for this hardcover was a nice surprise, and the original Spider-Man vs. The Sinister Six story was charming.

I really enjoyed the book and how beautiful the artwork is. My book jacket cover was a little damaged as you can see. I was a little heartbroken on the day I received the book by mail. Took it out of the package and disappointed to see the crease that is visibly there and how noticeable it was. Overall this book is amazing. I really want to return and see if I can get another copy.

We are die hard Alex Ross fans and this book was a reluctant gift for our dearest friend in the planet. It is a visual feast of artistry and I have to admit I almost didn’t wrap it to give it away. If you have a passion for Superheores, this is a must have for your library!!!

With each trip to Germany, my family finds that our German classes just aren’t providing what we need. Thank goodness for “What They Didn’t Teach You in German Class.” Since my husband travels with his laptop and needs to keep in touch with his office, the terminology and information provided in the “Talking tech” chapter is very valuable and will allow him to communicate and find wifi connections easily.Traveling with my teenagers, we have seen all the “typically German” young people described, and these explanations will help us navigate the people we meet on our next trip and help them determine the kids they may want to hang out with. My son is into sports, and we go to Germany with “see a soccer game” at the top of his list. The chapters, “Sports and Games” and “The National Team” is all we need to at least get to the game and speak a bit to people sitting next to us. After that, the game is all we need. There will be chapters you might not need in “What They Didn’t Teach You in German Class” – but what you need is surely there.

As the title states, this is not a book for beginning to speak German. This book is a great book for anyone that is going to be traveling or spending anytime in a German speaking country or with someone who only speaks German. The subjects are widely varied from Meet & Greet, Booze, Bars, & Clubs, Smack Talk to Friends and Family. This book is a “sort-of follow up to Dirty German. This is a slang book. The format is easy to read and looking up a term you may need in conversation is easy to find. I really like that there is a grammar review for readers to refresh the memory. This book will help you not to sound like a tourist.

This is a book full of naughty phrases and R-rated content. My 13-year old bought it to give to his sister for a present for her upcoming exchange trip ... it has to go back! BEWARE that the language is not appropriate for all ages.

This book is the PERFECT book for anyone who wants to speak german when... they're actually in Germany. I don't know about you, but our german professor never taught us how to ask for a proper pint, or how to ask a gentleman caller up for a night cap ;) Want to hook up with a dude? No problem - einen kerl abschleppen. Say that 10 times fast and maybe it will actually happen? What I love about this book is that it also has tips or reasons why a translation is the way it is. It should come as no surprise to anyone that "grab the bong" aka die blubber holen's translation of blubber comes from the blub blub sounds when you smoke a bubbler. These translations are absolutely hilarious and the tips and explanations for translations are the best. It even has something for the mean girl in everyone - because as the book mentions, spend enough time in germany and you'll find a few ugly folks too ;) This book will teach you a thing or two but also have you cracking up the entire time. It is so funny and dead on.

This book is hilarious! I love it! It also gives some cool tips! I literally LOL while reading this book.

Marc Peter Keane is a garden designer, artist, and author based in Ithaca NY. Having lived in Kyoto Japan for nearly 20 years, his work is deeply influenced by the aesthetics and culture of Japan. Besides having beautiful pictures, I was pleasantly surprised to find that this is a serious scholarly work about the history of tea gardens. It is very thorough, easy to understand even though it's scholarly (although the writing style isn't the most captivating -- this isn't pop lit), organized, and very useful for a student of tea or Japanese gardens.

Keane has done a great service to both those who are interested in gardens and those who are interested in the Way of Tea. This is a beautifully designed and illustrated book that will fulfill every requirement for proud display on your coffee table. At the same time, it is a serious look at the history of the tea garden, where it came from, its forms and purposes, its influence on other types of gardens and architecture. Keane is particularly to be commended for tracing the history of the tea garden and the development of its design throughout history. This is something that has been missing from the English literature about tea gardens and is a great help in understanding the function of the garden and the goals of its designers. This book is to be highly recommended for anyone with an interest in the Way of Tea or the development of garden design in Japan.

Subtly builds your perspective on Japan at the time, and provides an understanding of the garden path. Recreates certain themes in a way that they 'stick' in your mind.Frankly, there is very little on the actual flora involved, and you almost understand why when you are finished. Memorable and enriching.

Will be if not already a Classic.

Anything Keane has done about Japanese Gardens is great. I'm a Volunteer Guide at Portland's beautiful Japanese Garden, so am most interested in JG. Part of our Garden is a tea house and tea garden. Keane does a fine job of explaining and illustrating both. As in all his books, Keane includes beautiful photos and clear, well-written explanations. The book is essential for any library on the subject.

Grade 2-4?This pointed lesson is told as the story of a classroom health report. There's a bit of humor at the outset as Maddie, contemplating her grandfather's terrible cough, blurts out, "Smoking stinks!" Readers will empathize with her embarrassment as the teacher confronts her for her outburst and assigns smoking as the topic for her report. At lunch, she and a classmate discover that they both have health problems made worse by a family member's smoking, so they invite Maddie's grandfather to speak to the class about his habit. Buttner's charcoal sketches, suffused with subdued color, are grainy and robust, but somewhat inconsistent in the age and appearance of the two children. However, both classroom and home scenes are unpretentious and lively. The points made by Grandpa Norman are predictable: "There's NOTHING good about smoking." Endorsements from health professionals fill the jacket and endsheets, adding to the didacticism. The story moves along well, though, and offers readers the chance to speak up about the smoking done around them. Readers will join the class in cheering Grandpa Norman as he throws away his cigarettes. Gr. 2^-3, younger for reading aloud. Maddie can't concentrate in school one day because she is so frustrated and worried about her grandfather's smoking. He keeps her up at night coughing, and the smoke aggravates her allergies. Later, while working on her report for health class, she asks her grandfather to tell her about why he smokes. He explains the addictive powers of nicotine and describes the diseases smokers get. Yes, it is didactic, but Maddie's concerns ring true, and the author gives the right amount of information to make her point without overburdening the story. Artist Thom Buttner draws people with highly expressive faces, and the illustrations, on textured paper, are several notches above the norm for a book so clearly intended to present a message. I use this book when I teach my smoking unit. I think the book is very well written. Every year my students reaction to this book says it all. The react and learn about the subject of the book, smoking. We have heartfelt discussions about the book and their own personal stories. My goal is that my students learn never to start smoking and to have some compassion for those who are trying to quit smoking.

The information from the grandfather is particularly compelling. He explains to his granddaughter that he still smokes because he is addicted and has tried many times to stop. He expresses anger that he is addicted.The granddaughter observes people smoking and chewing tobacco. Her observations and the illustrations convey the "yuckiness" of tobacco. Some people who are not moved by long-term consequences, can understand the unattractive, unappealing aspects of tobacco. Between the girl's observations and the grandfather's discussion, children are experience both the short and long term effects of smoking.This book should be interesting and accessible to elementary school and middle school-aged children and adolescents. Fabulous storyline and pictures--the story of a girl doing a research project on smoking for her health class; her grandfather is a smoker.Appropriate for grades 1-6.

Such a great book to teach children to never touch cigarettes! It's very important to teach the future generation and to raise awareness and make them realise how dangerous smoking is.

The real truth of this story is lost in the sensasionalist notion of it's topic, namely smoking. Obviously the authors are no shareholders of RJR or Phillip Morris. But, bury a bad-mannered girl who loses the ability to conduct her in a civil manner, by raising her hand to make her sentiments known for instance, in a topic about smoking, then all is well and good, right? Wrong. If this had been a book about anything else, we'd have been outraged at the manners of this child, yet, because it deals with second hand smoke, we tolerate it. For shame. Put this child in the corner, then let her voice her sentiments. Teach her some manners, then she can talk about others' and their right to smoke freely, particularly adults (whom she feels the need to criticize). A bad-mannered, foul-mouthed little girl, in need of serious civility.
